Bulletin 1861

Internet Edition No.1 - August 1996

Welcome

Welcome to the pre-season Bulletin, rushed out in readiness for the trials on the 21st September. The regular Bulletin is under temporary new management and will be appearing soon with all the regular features.

Contributions

Remember that its your Bulletin, and it can only work if members contribute. If you have a point to raise, don't sit and whinge about it, send in a letter and create some constructive debate. if you want character assassination of a team mate, let me have the gossip. Anonymity of the contributor can be arranged!

How, what, where?

Contributions can be sent in by post to c/o Steve Miller, 44 Dartmouth Court, Dartmouth Grove, Greenwich SE10 8AT. You can fax me at work on 0171 608 1224. e.mail me steve@type.co.uk (a preferable method). You can scribble something out on the back of a beer mat and give it to me in the bar if you like. In fact, it doesn't matter how you get me the information, just get me the information.

Get Wired

For those who didn't know, the oldest hockey club in the world is probably one of the most technically au fait thanks mainly to Roddy Harrington & Simon Rous who maintains the clubs very own internet site on the World Wide Web at http://lewisham.gov.uk/sports/blackheath-hc/ take a look at it if you get the chance. There is also a healthy interchange of jokes, gossip and news via e.mail in whats been named the Blackheath Network. if you what to join in with the the growing number of Tech Heads in the club, e.mail me on steve@type.co.uk
If anyone doesn't understand what the hell I've just explained, buy JB a beer and he'll take you on a tour of the digital highway

Training

This takes place every Thursday evening at Lloyds Bank astro turf, Copers Cope Road, Beckenham. Each session strats promptly at 8.30pm. Training is open to everyone.

Selection

The selection committee will meet every fortnight throughout the season so there will be plenty of scope for players to move up (and down) sides. This is particularly importnat for those players who might not find themselves in the appropriate team at the beginning of the seaon. Remember - your Skipper is watching you.

Social

Danny Mitchell is the new Social Secretary, so anyone who has any suggestions for events should contact Danny. The clubhouse is also available for non-club events. This is a useful source of income. In the first instance, contact Glenn Snashell who is currently obtaining the appropriate license should anyone wish to get married in the club house (particularly useful for players who wish to avoid the inconveniece of missing a match because of their wedding)

Dates for your Diary

Club Auction Saturday 19th October at the club. Much has already been said in anticipation of this major event. The return of the Golf Club. There are rumours that there will be about twenty pairs of moccasins. Since the last sighting of 'The Track suit' was at the Manchester Tour, Snashell is prepared to donate his. Find out which childhood toys will be given away by JB, and how much Johnny Couves is willing to pay for an empty envelope. If you want to know what this is all about, come along to this fun packed evening. The cost is £6.00 which includes food.

Club Dinner Thursday 21st November at NatWest Bank After the huge success of last years festivities (particularly the apre-dinner festivities at the Lazy Toad nite spot) , this is the one to take the Friday off from work.

Quiz Night Saturday 7th December. Another huge night based more on the abuse that flies between the players than the cerebral apptitute of the teams.

Here is a copy of the press release that went to the local press:

Blackheath HC Opens Season with the help of the World Wide Web

Blackheath Hockey Club starts the beginning of the 1996/97 season with its first XI aiming its sights high after missing out promotion into the Southern Premier League last season by a single point.

Trials take place on Saturday 21st September at 10.30 am at Lloyds Bank astro turf, Copers Cope Road, Beckenham. Anyone interested in joining Blackheath Hockey Club should either turn up at the trials or contact Steve Miller, Team Secretary at 0181 692 1843 (evenings) or by e.mail on steve@type.co.uk at any time.

Club training takes place every Tuesday evening throughout the season, again at Lloyds Bank astro turf, Copers Cope Road. Everyone is invited to attend, and each session starts promptly at 8.30 pm.

Pre-season matches have produced mixed results, with the First XI fielding a very young side being beaten 5-2 by a highly experienced Tunbridge Wells team. The Second XI beat local rivals Beckenham 2-1, whilst losing to Tunbridge Wells 3-2 in a closely fought match. Both XI's are experimenting with new team formations since the removal of the offside law in the Summer.

Whilst holding the illustrious title of being the oldest hockey club in the world, Blackheath HC uses modern technology to recruit its players. It uses the internet to get hold of new members from all over the world, the latest edition being a Canadian who played some Summer hockey for the club whilst on work placement in London. The web site was set up and is run by former Club Secretary Roddy Harrington, and is one of only a handful of field hockey sites that exist in the world. The Blackheath internet site can be found at http://lewisham.gov.uk/sports/blackheath-hc/
