BEHC Ladies 3XI vs Sevenoaks, 5-1!
By Nicky Affleck
Wind Beneath our Wings!
Blackheath L3XI took on Sevenoaks ladies 6s in what seemed to be a lovely sunny but windy day, until the 2nd half when the heavens opened.
Kate 'are we playing on that' Dunford warmed us up, and Kate 'socks' Wilkinson stretched us out ahead of a highly anticipated game. Emma was really feeling the cold wind on the day...
Blackheath had a shakey start, struggling to settle and a little frantic. Solid play by the opposition saw them winning a short corner, and a good strike followed, deflected off one of our players for a goal to Sevenoaks 1-0.
Heads down as we had work to do, Blackheath ladies then found their rhythm, linking well and attacking. Blackheath managed to force a short corner. After a tactical huddle at the top of the D, we were ready to get the score level. After a solid ball from Kate Wilkinson to top of the D, a slip from Nicky to Emma and a perfectly timed dink back to the p spot from Emma gave Nicky a solid position to deliver the perfect slip-slap-slop to the back board. 1-1.
Both teams were up for the win! Sevenoaks swiftly made their way down the middle of the pitch and a strike towards goal saw Becks 'I nearly scored a goal' Ward clearing the ball off the right post. A few minutes later a Blackheath power strike from in front of the goalie, saw one of the oppo block the goal with their feet, which rewarded Blackheath with a p-flick. There was no doubt on who was going to take it! Magui 'I have p flick skills' Bertarinin stepped up calmly and flicked a fast ball left of the goalie. 2-1 to Blackheath saw us into half time.
Not getting complacent, Blackheath started the 2nd half well, nice tight triangles and some solid individual play. A sharp ball from Kylie 'assist legend' Brackenridge resulted in a pressure play tap in past the goalie by Amanda 'engage your core' Sibanda. 3-1 Blackheath.
Shortly after that, an assist from Robyn on the right wing saw Nicky slap a fantastic goal from top d to hit the back board. Blackheath 4-1.
Sevenoaks never gave up, with lots of pressure from them in our d followed but Ali, Helen and Becks frustrated their best efforts to score. With a break against the late flow of the game, we won another short corner and a straight strike from the top of the circle saw Robyn take Blackheath to a score of 5-1 with 2 minutes to go.
A great performance by both teams, a competitive game on a wet and very windy day.
Onwards to the next game.
WOTW went to Kate 'are we playing on that' Dunford for great play, both in offense and defense. And DOTD went to Amanda "engage your core " Sibanda, for well...engaging her core!
