Over 300 junior players, parents & family members attended our special Awards & Presentation event on Sun 7th May

Last Sunday saw a fabulous turnout from so many of our junior players and their families when we all gathered for a morning of Hockey Olympics on the astro before heading to the fabulous King Georges Hall at Eltham College for our Awards presentation. This was followed by a fantastic buffet provided by our wonderfully supportive parents.

Awards were presented by Head Coach Sam Djavit and our Men's 1st Team Captain Chris Harden. Chris also brought along the prestigious EH Trophy that his team had won the week before.

Award winners are below after a short season review.

BOEHC Junior Section Season Review

Our Junior Section just gets bigger and better. It continues to develop and expand and has become the true heart of the club brought to life by a team of special volunteers and made possible by the vital generosity of our sponsors Grand Cru Co and KFH. Under the visionary leadership of Junior Chairman Matt Wilde, the fantastic organisational skills of Junior Secretary Amanda Hutchings and the energy of a fantastic Junior Management Team of Niall Couper, Kyoko Leadlay, Fenno Outen, Ravi Wickramasuriya, Carolyne Dykes, Nicky Affleck and Neil Arkle the section has come on leaps and bounds. The Juniors are firmly back on the map and participating successfully in competitions all over the South East. We now Coach over 250 youngsters on a Sunday morning and if we include the numerous ‘satellite clubs’ in schools in the surrounding area as well as primary school coaching sessions then that number swells to over 500. The membership has grown with a significant rise in girls participating with our U10 and U12 Girls the largest and most popular age groups. Our Junior members attend a range of schools from across several boroughs. Our invaluable Parent Managers in each age group have been a resounding success and much of what we manage to achieve is down to them. We welcomed a number of new coaches and assistants who have fitted in superbly and driven the standards and quality up. In addition a host of Young Leaders continue to assist the team with Coaching across the sections. Sam Djavit has once again been the effervescent face of our Junior Coaching delivering knockout sessions and guiding other coaches in their development.

Our Junior Coaching was boosted by the arrival of Tanner Bottomley and Mike Benson from South Africa. Their input was fantastic and the youngsters really enjoyed having them involved.

Becks Ward initiated and ran a wonderful bespoke Goalkeepers Coaching programme for U10 and U12 Boys and Girls. She got all our Junior GK’s kitted out correctly and started them on their road to ‘Maddie Hinch’ excellence. This was immensely beneficial and something we look to develop and extend further.

A growing core of U6s begins our Junior Coaching programme with some fantastic kids eager to learn and pick up a stick. A great band of Coaches including Sam Djavit, Matt Wilde, Sarah Banks, Lucy Harford, Jeanette Grabham and Becks Ward have contributed to this most important area.

Weekly coaching sessions have been supplemented every 2 or 3 weeks by a series of matches and tournaments home and away. Our Mixed U8 teams participated very successfully in numerous tournaments this season with some impressive talent for the future in their ranks. All led superbly by Will Nurse and Vicky Pitt.
Our U10 Boys led by Tanner Bottomley made huge progress from the first tournaments of the season to the last. Dedication and self-belief drove them on to turnaround initial results and finished strongly. The U10 Girls led by Steve Bowles and Sally Wallace have developed enormously and had lots of fun and success at their regular Triangular Tournaments.

The U12 Boys and U12 Girls are bursting with talent all across the pitch and made significant strides in some tournaments taking the scalps of many well established club teams. All aided by some top notch coaching. These are exciting times for this age group as it’s our biggest and most popular. Both sections able to field 3 teams where Tournaments allowed. The Boys were led by Matt Wilde, Mike Benson and Jake Lamplough. The Girls by Jeanette Grabham, Fenno Outen, Phil Kinch and Karen Stevenson.

Gemma Nurse (Girls Hockey Coach at Colfes School) joined us to lead the ever expanding U14 & U16 Girls. She’s been a fantastic addition to the club and her influence has seen a number of Girls graduate to the Ladies 4s. Mike Benson also made great contributions to the Girls development.

The Boys U14 and U16 led by Ravi Wickramasuriya, Chris Brown and Sam Djavit made good progress in the very competitive and prestigious Mercian Home Counties Colts Hockey League. This is a higher standard of competition based across the region against some of the country’s top teams. All the boys did the club proud with a good mix of results. Their performances were always fully committed and brave.

The Club has numerous Juniors players involved with the England Hockey Player Pathway programme who are attending County and Regional Development Centres, Academy Centres & Regional Performance Centres. A good number of boys also represent the County at various age levels and some are part of the Regional Squads. Jake Owen has been our most successful player in this process recently being selected for England U18. A phenomenal achievement. These numbers increase every year as our Juniors benefit at an early age from coaching and competition at the club. It’s enormously important for the Club’s sustainability and continued success that our Juniors progress into the Senior teams. It’s therefore hugely satisfying to see so many ‘graduates’ and ‘current students’ from our Junior Academy now competing positively in Senior Men’s and Ladies Teams up and down the Club.

The Junior Section is operating at full capacity and desperately needs more Coaches, Assistants and help so please get involved – be part of the legacy and the future.
