Blackheath kicks off the 2016/17 season with Ladies trials and tryouts as part of HockeyFest

The coaching triumvirate arrived, pretty in pink, eager in blue and welcoming in grey, Richard, Rob and Mirza, all ready to support new and existing players to show and tell of their commitment to the club. Club management came to support in the form of Angela Saunders (complete with welcomed elite athlete snacks of chocolate and squash), Matt Wilde with son, Noah and Karen who steered the athletes for two-hours, informing them of what the club has to offer in the coming weeks and what is expected from them to make the club work as a homogeneous unit. Introductions were made and friendships rekindled.

Although trials come but once a year, when it comes, it brings oxygen debt and lactate overload. However early the date is added to the diary, its arrival always comes too soon for peak fitness and a streamline physique, if such a date exists.
But amongst Saturday’s crew were shades of Team GB Hockey prowess, exemplified when Nicole won the speed trial for consuming foot-long edible laces.

Other impressive parallels included a dedication to correctly follow Richard’s cone-inspired tasks and to remain focussed when the cones won; the ability to maintain a manoeuvre when legs have turned to jelly and a conversation when dehydration should have immobilised the tongue. It was a great day out heralding the start of the 2016/2017 season, bring it on!
