DOMINANCE, A CLEAN SHEET AND A THOROUGHLY DESERVED 3 POINTS
BEHC faced Folkestone Optimists in their third league game of the season. Although still unbeaten, after last week's slightly disappointing draw, a win was most definitely the aim for the day
After a cameo appearance in the changing room from BEHC coach Edd, it was left to Rob and Jenny to motivate the side for the game.
Reality soon dawned as the half empty changing room meant a depleted side for the game, the bare 11 only for this one. The implications of this seemed to ripple through the side, with an eerily quiet warm up before the game.
Some last minute persuasion meant Carmel and Caitlin stepped up from the 3's to stand as subs for us, despite having played already. Nonetheless, with Jen's motivational words ringing in our ears, we stepped across the white line and began.
Early pressure led to a number of great chances that just wouldn't go in for BEHC with the Folkestone keeper "playing a blinder".....not to be put off, another short corner was awarded and a "Jilly special" routine was chosen.....
A great injection from Sally, stop from Vicky and 1-2 between Banksy and Sue, ended up with the ball in the back of the net at last, Sue getting the touch, 1-0 BEHC.
BEHC were dominant, although barely called into action, Ceri, Sian, Kate and Sarah remained vigilant throughout, snuffing out any thoughts of a Folkestone leveller. Despite a significant number of chances, half time came and the lead remained a slender one at 1-0.
More motivation from Rob and "water girl" Carmel during the half time break saw the second half start in the same manner as the first. Some excellent midfield triangles and transfers resulted in a great ball into the D from Sian and after a minor game of pinball wizard around the D, Beth was on hand to slap the second into an open goal. 2-0 BEHC.
Continued pressure from the forwards made it difficult for Folkestone to get out of their half and BEHC were awarded with more free hits and short corners, much to Folkestone's mounting disgruntlement. Another great injection from Sally and after shot and rebound, the ball fell nicely back at Sally's feet for her to slot home her first of the season and BEHC's well deserved third goal. 3-0 BEHC.
With legs getting weary, the time came to call on super sub Caitlin Chick for her first team debut. Her runs into the corners and leads for the midfield showed she is a natural and one to watch. The opposition's frustration continued to grow and after another mazy run into the D by Vicky, she let rip with a reverse stick slap that beat the GK and nestled into the corner of the goal. 4-0 BEHC.
Despite further chances, the final score remained 4-0, a great win, 3 points and a clean sheet secured.
Tremendous thanks go to Carmel Longley and Caitlin Chick for stepping up to the plate when needed and to Jenna for her support on the sidelines.
Player of the match went to Sue for her work rate and the Egg on Your Face award went to vice captain Kate "PR sweetie" Petherbridge for ignoring all correspondence and parking in the wrong place!
Next week sees us visit Marden.
