UNITED BEHC LADIES CREATED A WINNING COMBINATION
Blackheath Ladies 1st Team vs Canterbury 3rds
Blackheath Ladies 1st team were feeling the effects of the half term break with just 10 of the normal squad available, however the incredible united front of the ladies section meant that the match at Canterbury ended in a 3-2 win to Blackheath.
The team were joined by Karen Stevenson, Haps Howell and Lucy Harford who had already won a match on Saturday morning and had kindly agreed to come and play again for the 1st team. The match got underway well with some calm passing throughout the pitch. The forwards started how they continued for the rest of the match making great runs, particularly in to the corners, which was the main piece of advice from our absent coach in his pre match ‘rallying the troops’ video message.
The first two goals of the match came in the first half and were both in Blackheath’s favour. Sue Moore made a run in to the D and went for a huge hit that didn’t quite connect as she had hoped, however Jenna Stonebanks was ready and received the bobbling ball perfectly place to push it over the line to bring the scoreline to 1-0. The second goal started from defence, Kathryn Sales passed the ball up through the midfield and through to Emma Letchford who found Sue Moore on the post who neatly slotted the ball away to secure Blackheath a 2-0 lead.
At half time Blackheath were content with their performance and were particularly grateful to the fantastic three who were playing brilliantly despite already having played one match that day. The second half saw more play in the Blackheath defensive D and unfortunately resulted in 2 Canterbury goals from short corners, both a combination of bobbling balls and well timed hits brought the scoreline to 2-2 with 15 minutes to go. Other highlights of the second half included Emma’s Glasgow Kiss and Sarah’s ball punching.
Blackheath were determined not to let this game slip away considering how well they had played so far. Their determination was rewarded through a well worked short corner. Kathryn Sales received the ball at the top of the D and picked out Sue Moore to her left who this time didn’t miss her attempt, stopped and smashed the ball in to the goal bringing the score line to 3-2. It was a tense final ten minutes but the hard work of the midfielders George Light and Sally Wallace in particular helped Blackheath keep hold of their lead until the final whistle blew. Again, a huge thanks to the players who came from their 2s match to play a significant role in the win.
