This was a late match at Holcombe Park, 3.30pm with gathering grey clouds and a cool breeze. Both teams were keen to dominate early as typically this has been a winning tactic for either side.
Blackheath and Elthamians Hockey Club (BEHC) took firm possession of the ball from the start with great passes and interceptions. Karen Stevenson of BEHC was conspicuous in her efforts to steal the ball from Holcombe and made some impressive runs, some for half the pitch, to either pass or take a shot on goal, but the Holcombe goal keeper kept out at least three or four typically certain goals.
The BEHC back players’ Harriet Howell and Hannah Morrell were notably Amazonian-like in their attack and defensive play, streaking up and down the pitch with such dominance, gaining ground and clearing balls to great effect. Goalkeeper Phil Swindell also looked very comfortable repulsing Holcombe’s attempts at goal.
Holcombe’s two key players began to counter, opening up the pitch to create gaps from which eventually, they scored the one and only goal. The umpires helped to keep the play moving, Annette Golding being exceptional in her decisive reactions. Karen Stevenson was awarded ‘Man of the match’ for great play whilst Hannah Billson was awarded the humorous ‘Thanks for Coming Award’ thanks to her furry canine friend.
BEHC were determined to win this match and so take the upper hand for the re-match but now they’ll have to revise their formation before that clash in 2018.
Final Score Holcombe 1-0.
