A SCRAPPY BATTLE TO WIN 3 POINTS
A half time team talk seemed to work its wonders as the 2s knocked in 2 beautiful goals
On the 11th November, the Blackheath and Elthamians HC L2’s lined up to face a strong Burnt Ash L2’s. The team had completed the pre match briefing and instructions, followed by a thorough warm up, which saw the team ready for action.
The team showed a united front then when they paid their respect to remember those who we had lost by reflecting in a minute silence.
The scene was set, the game started in a positive manner, with the ball being won back from the start and again the press was on the opposition. This continuous pressure saw movement and passes down the right hand side to Amanda Huggett who took a beautiful clean strike at goal, smashing it past the goalie however, this amazing strike and goal was disallowed as it glanced and hit the little
toe of one of our own players.
Still the team pushed on to get that allusive first goal. Along with work down the right, this was equally supported by work down the left, with Lucy Harford’s drive and reverse stick skills, showing a powerful reverse hit at goal which was again parried away by the Burnt Ash goal keeper.
This first half saw the BE L2’s have 5 penalty corners with different and creative ideas coming from each post. Right post to Harriet Howell, left post to Robyn Mansfield, ‘tick tock or ping pong’ between Robyn and Karen Stevenson, straight strikes and a beautifully lifted shot by Jeanette Grabham which were all saved and defended by the Burnt Ash defence.
Burnt Ash were putting up a strong fight with breaks and their own attacks however these where intercepted and cleared by the defence of Harriet, Caitlin Chick, Ali Prior, Yanoulla Merriman and Rebecca Ward, who all showed composure to calmly clear the ball and take it away from the BE defensive area.
Half time came, score still 0 – 0. Jeanette gave a resounding and powerful team talk, backed up by stand in Coach Hannah Morell which rallied the team to continue with the pressure on opposition.
The second half started again with a positive outlook and determination from the team, with a beautiful line ball from Ali to Kat Allix, who drove with conviction down the right hand side to the base line, delivering a powerful strike across the goal face, narrowly missing the forwards lining up to put the ball away. Another penalty corner was awarded but again it was defended well by Burnt Ash and BE where left still trying to find a different way of beating their opposition.
Frustration was mounting as BE were being denied a much deserved goal, then 15 minutes in to the 2nd half, a free hit outside the D was awarded. Jeanette acted quickly and drove the 5 metres needed before passing a reverse hit in to the goal area, where the ball was picked up and put pass the goal keeper by Juliet Laycock. BE HC L2’s 1 – Burnt Ash 0.
BE were pushing hard to find that elusive 2nd goal. This goal arrived in the 22nd minute with a ball from Karen to Robyn who was in space on the right who then fired the ball in the D where it was picked up by Amanda who performed a little flick around the defender to Juliet who neatly put the 2nd goal away. BE L2’s 2 – Burnt Ash L2s 0.
Burnt Ash still had fight in them, winning a penalty corner with 10 minutes to go, and their well worked corner beat our defence.
BE HC L2’s 2 – Burnt Ash L2’s – 1. This built up to a very tense and final finish to the game with the ball going end to end, however the
team stood tall, scraped and battled to the end.
Final score BEHC L2’s 2 – Burnt Ash L2’s 1.
Player of the match was awarded to Juliet for her fantastic play and 2 goals.
Thanks for coming was awarded to Yanoulla, whose time management skills could do with some improvement.
