ICE HOCKEY ANYONE?
No frozen pitch for us – Game On!!
The team awoke to hear the frost and pitch report from our resident pitch inspector, to say the pitch was risky and solid in places however with positive thoughts and a very active warm up to beat away any leftover frost, (which did see the first casualty of the game with Hannah Morrell unfortunately catching Becks Ward (GK) on the only part of the body without padding with a beautiful warm up strike on goal!) So first aid and strapping needed prior to the game however the team stayed positive and they were ready to start what would be a very tight and frantic game of hockey.
So the match began, however BEHC seemed to be frozen and stuck in their own half with waves of attack from Gillingham, who were relentless in applying pressure. The Gillingham attack saw numerous penalty corners however the Blackheath defence stood firm with strong tackles and interceptions from Hannah Morrell, Harriet Howell, Ali Prior and Yanoulla Merriman.
There were small breaks in the Gillingham attack with BEHC breaking and crossing into the other half with Amanda Huggett and Hannah Richmond driving down the pitch only to be denied by the opposition.
From these mini attacks, we gained our first penalty corner. This corner saw Captain Jeanette Grabham take a strike on goal however Gillingham defended well and cleared the BEHC chance. Although from this, BE suffered their 2nd injury of the match with Harriet being hit at the penalty corner forcing her to hobble off to face treatment.
This injury meant a quick shuffle in position and from this confusion Gillingham pounced and created a very well worked goal 2 minutes before the end of the first half.
Half time score
BEHC L2 - 0
Gillingham L1 - 1
After a rousing team talk from Jeanette, the team started positively with the attack now coming from BE. Gillingham on the back foot and BE striving to get the equaliser, some exciting and near misses were created so much so, that the spectators went in to their own frenzy and lost their footing, falling over, taking each other out which ended up with unfortunately sun glasses to be broken. This wave of attack saw the start of a run of penalty corners for BE seeing in total of 7 and from one of these using the ‘ping pong’ routine; this saw the ball pulled out by Harriet to Jeanette, who slipped the ball to the right, where Karen Stevenson was waiting, patiently pushing the ball back cleanly to Hannah who was waiting on the penalty spot, to neatly and clinically put the ball into the back of the goal.
Equaliser for BEHC L2’s!! Score BEHC L2s 1 – Gillingham 1
The last 5 minutes saw the game turning into an end to end battle with both teams pressing for the winning goal. However the final whistle came when the temperature began to drop and the pitch turning back in to an ice rink, which saw a few players slip due to the wintry conditions approaching.
BEHC L2s - 1
Gillingham L1s -1
Player of the match went to Hannah R for her amazing drives and attacks on the Gillingham goal and Thanks for coming was awarded to Hannah M for injuring her goal keeper in the warm up.
