Ladies 2nd XI - Match centre

Blackheath & Elthamians 2
Holcombe 2
Sat 20 Jan 15:00 - Kent Hockey League - Kent Hockey League - Division 1 Full time

A battle through wind and rain......and Holcombe defense too!

On Saturday, not only did the Ladies 2’s need an umbrella for the weather which did not let up for the whole game, and battered the pitch and players with ice cold rain, but it was needed for the amount of goals that resulted.

The match started is a positive manner with the BEL2’s piling on the pressure to the Holcombe defence with lots of short, sharp passes and darting runs. These attacks led to the first goal which was a strong run down the right side of the pitch with a swift and precise ball in from Rosie Mills where Robyn Mansfield waited by the goal to calmly put the ball in to the goal. 1 – 0 to BEL2’s.

Even with the momentum with BE, Holcombe struck back, breaking up the pitch, beating the BE defence. The score line equalises 1 – 1.
Half time came and the game was even. A quick and motivating team talk given with the team even more determined to push forward and get the win. However Holcombe had other ideas and pounced and were awarded a short corner and converting this with a lucky bounce due to the saturated pitch. 1- 2 to Holcombe.

BEL2’s spirits were not damped though (despite the weather) and they pushed on with more determined runs and linking passes, taking into account the words of wisdom from the half time talk; Stand tall and meet the ball first, don’t go down without a fight, the match was BEL2s for the taking. This fighting spirit developed in to one of the most unusual goals of the season, with Kat Allix battling down the right hand side, entering and beating a number of Holcombe defenders on her way with her twisting and turning and a final push towards the goal. The goal keeper totally un- footed and unsure of the speed and direction of the ball saw it disappear past the nearside post. Scores level 2 -2.

BEL2’s awoken by this goal saw the chance they needed to take advantage of a shocked Holcombe by again pressing on to get the win! With all players working at 100%, the team charged forward, with yet another commanding and powerful run by Amanda Huggett down the right side of the pitch with a strike across the goal face, where Megan Murdock waiting to strike on goal, only to be halted by a Holcombe foot. Short corner awarded. The short corner was played with Jeanette Grabham picking up the ball at the top of the D, firing a powerful and formidable strike beating all of the Holcombe defence. Score 3 -2.

BEL2’s weren’t finished there, they continued to press on, and again with play being moved around the pitch. This combination resulted in another Kat Allix goal who pounced to neatly put the ball past the Holcombe goal keeper. Score 4 -2.
Even though only 6 minutes til the end of the game, it did not see Holcombe give up the chase, with them scoring their 3rd goal of the game. Score 4 -3.

With Coach Rob Hughes, giving encouragement and game management advice the team saw out another win for 2018, finishing BEL2’s 4 – Holcombe L2s 3.
Player of the match was awarded to Kat Allix for again her tireless work effort and her 2 goals and Ita Antonolli awarded TFC for wearing a beanie hat for the whole game.
