A TOUGH BATTLE BUT BEHC L3S REMAIN UNDEFEATED
Blackheath Ladies 3s face a tough fight against Holcombe Ladies 4s but their persistence and determination is rewarded with a 3-0 win
It is fair to say that the Blackheath Ladies 3s who played on Saturday morning at Blackheath High School were not at their peak form. With players having to sit out due to mega blisters and tooth removal during the week and more arriving at the pitch with aches, pains and flu symptoms. The team knew they were going to need to dig deep to come out on top. It was also a cold morning and the pitch was covered in nasty substances that Emma tried to take care of...but the less said of that, the better!
Kate 'Socks' Wilkinson lead the Team through a good warm up with Pappa Socks looking on and after a quick Team re-shuffle from Captain Nicky Affleck, the starting whistle blew.
BEHC went out fighting but so did Holcombe, including their abundance of enthusiastic and fast youngsters. The 1st half of the game was equally played across the pitch, with both Team’s having opportunities to break away and attack the D. The attacking line up of Carmel Longley, Leanne Thompson, Hannah Richmond and Kylie Brackenbridge kept pushing and were eventually rewarded with a goal from Hannah.
By half time, the BEHC Team were frustrated. A score of 1-0 was an unusual feeling for BEHC Ladies 3s, who are normally aiming for double digits, but the speed and concentration of Holcombe players surrounding their defensive D meant this time they had not been so lucky.
The half time talk was over-complicated with different advice, but BEHC got the general gist to move faster, work harder and come together as a Team. By focusing on moving the ball between players and not playing independently, the game was soon dominated by BEHC forward and midfield players including Nicky Affleck, Emma Wreathall, Nicole Jackson and with invaluable support from Rosie Mills, Kate Wilkinson and Ali Rodrigues to stop the ball moving back down the pitch. BEHC soon had a short corner opportunity and with a slip-slap-slop between Kate Wilkinson (injecting) Nicky Affleck (stop at the top D) and Emma Wreathall (slip to the right), Nicky made sure that ball touched the back board.
This spurred the Team on and the hard work kept coming. After multiple attempts on goal, Carmel Longley managed to score a goal all of her own and the score line was up to 3-0. Whilst BEHC kept pushing, Holcombe kept fighting back and found many opportunities to break away and attack but the hard work of Helen Sadique, Cat Bryden, Rosie Mills, Kate Wilkinson and Ali Rodrigues, along with some awesome saves from Zoe Taylor, made sure that the Holcombe were never successful.
The full time whistle blew with a 3-0 win to maintain BEHC L3s winning streak and a goal difference reaching beyond 50 goals – and not even halfway through the season!
MOTM to Helen for amazing defence work and DOTD to Emma.
