BEHC Ladies 3s remain undefeated despite drawing 1-1 with Marden Russets.
The first task of the day for Blackheath Ladies 3’s was to find the pitch amoungst an array of tractors, porter-cabins and building materials. Of course some of the team took this opportunity for a quick photo shoot. Once the pitch was found, the team knew that they had to be on top form for their biggest test of the season so far. It was a cold morning, but after a thorough warm up lead by Kate ‘Socks’ Wilkinson and a riling and motivational team talk from Captain Nicky Affleck, the team were pumped up and ready to go.
BEHC went out fighting but so did Marden. For the first 15 minutes of play, Marden put pressure on the defensive line up of Cat Bryden, Helen Sadique, Ali Rodrigues and Rosie Mills. This pressure lead to a number of short corners being awarded to Mardens. Feeling the pressure and the determination to not let Mardens score, lead to Helen Sadique being returned to the half-way mark for breaking too fast out at short-corners. This was followed by Cat Bryden also being sent back for the same reason. This left BEHC defending a short-corner with only two players. However, some amazing defensive work from Kate ‘Socks’ Wilkinson and Ali Rodrigues and some commanding goal-keeping from Zoe Taylor kept Marden at bay.
The pressure continued to buil. This lead to some amazing goal-keeping from Zoe Taylor. However, the injuries started to occur with BEHC throwing everything that they could at it. Kate’ Socks’ Wilkinson cracked heads with another player and Rosie Mills stopped a shot at goal with her shins, however the team carried on fighting. The pressure from Mardens eventually lead to them scoring the first goal from open-play.
However, BEHC came back out fighting. The pressure started developing from some solid work in midfield from new player to the team Meg Mirdock and Emma Wreathall. This lead to BEHC winning a number of short-corners and after a slip-slap-slop short corner between Kate Wilkinson (injecting), Carmel Longley and Nicky Affleck lead to the equaliser from Captain Nicky Affleck. The goal came at the perfect time and BEHC players went into half-time feeling determined.
The half-time team talk was motivational and the team felt as though they had everything to play for. The second half saw BEHC dominating and playing their own game. The passing between the midfield of Meg Murdock, Kate Wilkinson and Emma Wreathall lead to mounting pressure from the front line of Carmel Longley, Cat Drum and Leanne Thompson. BEHC won a number of short-corners, however could not convert these to take the lead. BEHC were a lot calmer in their play in the second half and this was reflected in some amazing passes. However, the frustration appeared to start to build up which lead to Emma Wreathall being Green Carded for trying to tackle the player who was taking a 16.
Despite the mounting pressure from BEHC in the second half, they could not find the equaliser and the game finished on a 1-1 draw. Both teams fought well and it was a great game of hockey between the top two teams in the league. The first draw of the season for BEHC, however the not losing streak continues!!!
MOTM to Zoe for some amazing goalkeeping skills and DOTD to Helen for a number of reasons (not having the award before, filling in the DOTD form wrong, breaking too early TWICE on a short corner and foolery comments early on in the week).
Until next time tarra ducky yer brew’s mashin (See you later and go and have a cup of Yorkshire Tea)*
