The difference between Try and Triumph is the UMPH and that's exactly what the women gave it!
First game of 2018 and on a brand new pitch at the University of Greenwich. A bright and sunny day and spirits were high after the festive period. A quick team talk by Captain/birthday girl Nicky gave the girls game structure, subbing times and positioning. We were also joined by Rosie who recently moved up into the 2s and Amanda, our top goal scorer, who hobbled onto the pitch with her crutches. Both were there to help with subbing and side line support.
After a quick warm up on the adjacent 3G pitch (can still feel all those mince pies!) we were physically and mentally prepped for the game. We won the toss but within 2 minutes and 20 seconds of the whistle, the opposition zig zagged their way past the entire team and scored the first goal. Hearing the sound of the ball hitting the wrong backboard and the shock on the faces of Blackheath seemed to give us the UMPH we needed. 2 minutes later, Captain Nicky scored from open play making it 1-1.
8 minutes later, our very own Fox in the Box Carmel scored another goal. The team had finally managed to remember how to play after a 4 week break. The defence held well, managed by Helen and Hayley on the back line. Ali, Cat B, Kate and Socks holding the halfs, receiving and distributing the ball beautifully to the inners and forwards.
A foot in the D meant a penalty corner for BEHC and the slip slap slop technique applied. Injected by Socks, received by Nicky who slipped it to Megs on the right. Megs popped it onto the P spot where it was smashed past the defence and hitting the backboard by Nicky. At 23:35 it was 3-1 to BEHC.
The game continued to flow with great distribution across the pitch. Emma, Megs and Nicky worked wonderfully as inners creating triangles with the wingers Kylie and Leanne to get the ball past Maidstone and into the D ready to make some shots on goal. With less than a minute until half time, a pass from Maidstone was intercepted by Socks. The ball was turned and quickly made its way up the pitch to the attacking line. A hit across the goalie by Nicky was tapped into the corner by Kylie. Whistle blows, half time and its Maidstone 1, BEHC 4.
The temperature was starting to drop as the sun went down and the flood lights were switched on. The team talk at half time was brief and halftime Haribo made an appearance. Sideline support and the Captain both agreed that we were playing well, energy was good but we needed to use the width a tad more and release the ball a fraction quicker.
2nd half begins and its a bit of rocky start for Blackheath. Maidstone clearly had a half time team talk with a plan but this only gave our goalie Zoe time to shine. The pressure was intense inside our own D but Zoe made very brave decisions and cleared the ball out of the zone. 15 minutes into the 2nd half, Zoe cleared a ball which was picked up by centre half Nicole who drove it up the pitch, composed herself and took a straight strike at the top of the D. BAM! Another goal for Blackheath!
The team moved the ball from side to side using the full width of the pitch to move around Maidstone players. The positive energy and team spirit led to a 2nd goal by Kylie. The remaining 10 minutes of the match allowed Blackheath to keep possession and glide the ball effortlessly for player to player. Maidstone held strong and there were a few shots on goal but no further points.
Final score Blackheath 6, Maidstone 1
