RAINING CHAMPIONS REMAIN ON TOP
Ladies 3s battle it out in the heavy rain and defeat Old Bordenians once again
The signs were not looking good for Blackheath before the match started. A long journey way into Kent, traffic problems, awful weather and a warm up in mud and puddles in temperatures of 4 degrees!
5 minutes into the game and it was clear that the opposition were fast, skilful, well organised and hungry to make their mark against the division leaders. This was unfamiliar territory and Blackheath knew they would have to dig deep to maintain their unbeaten record.
The opposition were making regular visits into Blackheath’s D and only some high quality defending and some excellent saves from keeper Sandra were denying them. Blackheath responded with some effective passing play to build a succession of attacks and deservedly took the lead through some excellent positioning on the back post from Leanne who neatly tucked the ball away.
The remainder of the first half was end to end stuff but Blackheath protected their 1-0 lead. After halftime, it was vital that Blackheath scored first and they did, Cat Brydon hammering a ball into the D with Leanne Thompson on hand for another accurate deflection on the back post.
Blackheath were now asserting their structure on the game and the territory and possession stats were swinging in their favour. A short corner saw captain Nicky Affleck find some space in the middle of the D and she made no mistake about finding the back of the net.
Blackheath’s thoughts turned to goal difference and they poured forward looking for more. Carmel Longley had been putting the defence and the keeper under pressure all game with her nifty footwork and she added the fourth to seal the win.
13 games in, 70 goals and still undefeated.
