PROTECTING THE HOUSE!
With only 11 players in total that captains call of, “Let the ball do the work!” was something we all could believe in.
On Saturday the 3rd January, eight tired ladies and three energetic juniors turned up for a late 4pm push back at Herne Bay Hockey Club. The allure of post match fish and chips managed to get the seniors going and with slight reluctance an effective warm up began lead by our own Ali Rodrigues (yes that’s Portuguese) in replacement of our poor Kate (aka Socks) who was at home poorly.
Once on pitch it came clear to our one spectator- shout out to Anna’s dad Mark- that we had not travelled this far to lose. The Blackheath ladies quickly dominated possession with some clever moves through Nicky, Cat D, Emma (puppy) and Nicole in the mid-field. Youth members Jasmine and Holly made a destination impression quickly with their positive attitude and legs of speed. Goals came thick and fast due to relentless pressure. Senior players used clear heads to ensure penalty corners were explored. Nicky, the strength of captaincy, opened the goal scoring with a well worked slip-slop- slap! Unfortunately minus the signature dive into the Astro! Excellent feeding the ball from the midfielders led to goals scored in the forwards by Carmel (2) and Kylie.
Half time feel and we were 4-0 up. Positive but exhausted and with the words of our Outstanding coach Mike meant we needed to convert more in the second half to prove we were following the training plan.
Herne Bay came back at us at the beginning of the second half and put ‘Amazing Annette’, ‘All over it Ali, and ‘Action girl Anna’ into the mix. With the mixture of age and skill it was soon returned to a goal fest! With another 4 in the second half for Carmel (3) and Cat D. Finishing the match with an 8-0 to Blackheath.
All in all, all be our on field playing national league umpire getting a warning from her fellow umpire it was a great game and an enjoyable run out to the coast.
Thanks Herne Bay for your pleasant play and for hosting us. Thanks to the youth and their forever love of chicken nuggets! - no one under 17 understands this..and to Holly for your undeniable Women of the Week - Year apparently that’s a thing!
