BEHC Ladies 3XI vs University of Kent 3-1!
By Nicky Affleck
A bright day for Blackheath Ladies 3XI
The sunshine was bright and Blackheath ladies 3XI were ready to shine on the lovely University of Kent hockey pitch. We knew the opposition was strong even though this was the first time we were going to play against them. We were confident but the game ahead was a slight uncertainty. After a motivating and empowering pre-match team talk delivered by our captain Nicky Affleck, and a warm-up led by our experts Kate Wilkinson and Rosie Mills, the team were ready to rumble.
Unfortunately, in the first 15 minutes, we went a player down with injury. Our solid defender, Cat Bryden had to stop playing due to a calf strain which flared up at last weeks training session (we hope to have you back soon.) The forward line's outstanding performance contributed to the first initial break for Blackheath ladies 3XI. The attack starting in midfield performed by Robyn, Nicky, Carmel, saw a perfect pass delivered to Kylie Brackenridge, who with a cheeky touch, finished the play beautifully putting the ball into the bottom corner of the opposition goal.
University of Kent’s strong and youthful side took quick control of possession and they managed to score their first goal. They put together some nice phases in the middle of the pitch and we were forced to fight back for another goal. Our second goal finally came just before the second half following a fantastic play in the middle down to the shooting circle where once more, Kylie was ready and did not let the opportunity of scoring her second goal, pass her by.
In the second half, Blackheath fought back hard and tried to regain possession. We were under pressure but the relentless work in defence from Rosie, Annette, Ali, and Maddy held off their attack. The final touch came with a perfect slip-slap-slop penalty corner routine performed by Emma and Nicky. The ball found the right spot off the 'p' spot and with a solid sweep, our captain took us to 3-1.
At the final whistle, Blackheath won 3-1. A great game for both teams, on an amazing sunny day.
Doughnut of the day went to Emma for heckling the football boys at teas, and our woman of the match was awarded to Kylie for great work up front!
Four more games to go and we keep shining!
