Once upon a time on a sunny Saturday afternoon BEHC W4 arrived at Colleague Meadow, full of hope enthusiasm and high spirit as the murmurs whispered in the wind – a full 11 available for the match!
A good mix of players, some new, some regulars, some returning but all of one ambition to win.
As to be expected for a 4.15 pushback the sun began to disappear and the temperature fell, Blackheath showed their mettle with some master classes on how to:
• defend, stop and break down attacks on goal. How to clear the ball and move the play away from BEH’s goal by Emily.
• to pick up the ball and drive through the defence from midfield to the D by Karen, Nat and Heidi.
• finish a run from mid field by taking the ball down the wing and curving into the D to score a great goal– Hiedi
• command a defence with calls and directions, high energy defending and clearances – NU
• Karen, Nat and Heidi worked tirelessly through the mid defending with passion, pushing the ball forward ,and feeding the ball to the forwards
• Give great support to new players directing them and helping them know where to position - Karen
The forward line of Ita, Aoife and Rita put some pressure on Holcombe’s defence but were unable to convert their opportunities,
Caitlin in goal needs a mention as she made some great saves especially the shot at goal in the last 3 minutes which looked as though it would slip by her but she calmly cleared it as the firework began to appear and we kept a clean sheet until the final sounded. A win 1-0.
Well done all.
All in all a great game. Thanks to the umpires who kept the game running smoothly and to Phil who shared his wisdom with us a half time.
Player of the match went to Emily
Thank you turning up – Ita for saying she would be very rusty as she hadn’t played for a while but showed us that she hadn’t lost her determination to get the ball off the oppo
