Marvellous Marvels make their mark

A beautifully sunny autumn afternoon welcomed the Marvels to JAGS as they prepared to play their debut match in the over 35s knock out cup competition against Tulse Hill.

The squad of 22 had dwindled to 13 as Saturday's matches took their toll on the experienced ladies but some strapping, ibuprofen & a nice cup of tea meant they were raring to go after a gentle warm up across the pitch & back.

Captain Vicki fired the ladies up with a team talk & the game began at a high tempo. Netty held the centre well & with Carmel, Sue & Sandra making good moves up front, Karen sent some cracking crosses into the d. Vicki used her silky skills to earn a short corner which Karen swiftly converted with a precise first time strike in the bottom left corner. 1-0 to the Marvels.

This prompted Tulse Hill to up their game and a long ball into the d was sent spinning into the goal drawing the game level.

Both teams pushed hard to create more chances as the heavens opened & flash flooded the pitch. The Marvels defended well with Sandie & newly qualified Ceri soaking up the pressure but a late goal meant the half time whistle went with Tulse Hill 2-1 up.

Team spirits stayed high as the team held a half time wet t-shirt competition in their away white kit, then started the second half with Vicki's reverse stick shot hitting the back board. 2-2!

Tired legs meant both teams sending long balls to do the work but occasionally taking out players in doing so.. Dannii & Annette worked well on the left with Sue Moore but some strong central play from the Tulse Hill ladies broke the deadlock & pushed them into the lead. A determined Blackheath fought on and dominated the final 10 minutes culminating in a well placed goal from Sue MB. The match ended 3-3 which meant straight to penalty flicks...

With everyone fighting to take a penalty (except for Sue who kindly took herself out of the running having scored already), five lucky ones were chosen. Sarah MB bravely took her place with her Maddie Hinch notepad in her back pocket but sadly the Marvels couldn't quite convert their own penalties meaning Tulse Hill won 4-2.

It was a most enjoyable first outing for the Marvels who are now relishing the prospect of the plate competition.... once they've had a chance to put their feet up with a nice cuppa..
