Sue Moore who plays for our Ladies first team, has been selected to play Hockey for Heroes in support for Help for Heroes charity.

Help for Heroes raise money to help our injured and fallen Heroes, and run a series of recovery centres across the country. Using Hockey as their sport to help, the Hockey for Heroes team work to raise funds for Help for Heroes and our Ladies 1st team player, Sue Moore has been selected for the squad! We manage to catch up with Sue for a quick chat and she tells us all the details about joining the Hockey for Heroes team.

Blackheath & OE's Hockey: Hi Sue, Congratulations on making the team! So where did Hockey begin for you?
Sue Moore: My love for Hockey started as early as school. I loved it so much that I continued to play at University and during my year out, I joined Bexleyheath Hockey Club. That was 1991 and I was there up until the start of this season when I came across to Blackheath and Old Elthamians Hockey Club.

BOEHC: How did you hear about the trials for Help for Heroes?
SM: There was an advert on their Facebook page in summer last year, that said they were considering starting a ladies side, so I expressed a keen interest. I knew the Men's team started in 2012 but this was the first sign of a Ladies team. However I didn't hear anything until September last year when the trials date was published.

BOEHC: What motivated you to try out for Help for Heroes?
SM: I feel fairly strongly about supporting our Armed Forces, after all that they do for us. I know I am privileged to live the lifestyle that I live, and in a very large part, that is due to what others have given and sacrificed on my behalf.

BOEHC: So how was trials and how often is training?
SM: The trials day was amazing. Kate Richardson-Walsh was there! As well as a few of the men's side too. The whole ladies team is still so new that the plans are still in the making but our first training weekend is on the 11th and 12th February in Bisham. It will be exciting to start training and bonding with the rest of the team.

BOEHC: What do you hope to get from playing for Help for Heroes?
SM: I can't think of a better way to raise money for a charity that you support, than by doing something that you love! The level of hockey is also really good, so I'm hoping the experience will also make some improvements to my own hockey! The people I have met so far seem an amazing group and I can't wait to travel around with them, undertake our challenges and raise money.

BOEHC: What are the future plans for you and the Help for Heroes team?
SM: As I said, it's still all in the planning stages at the moment, but the idea is to replicate what the Men's side do. Every other year, the Men have undertaken a challenge and raised money along the way. In 2015, the team completed the 3 Peaks Challenge (Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis & Snowdon). This year's challenge is called Op Stretcher and they are carrying an injured soldier from Cardiff to Lee Valley (250 miles) in 10 days, and playing 30 games of hockey along the way. I imagine the Ladies Team will have to rise to the occasion and complete our own challenge....

BOEHC: How can others get involved and support Help for Heroes?
SM: There will be "exhibition" matches, auctions, raffles etc that everyone can support, and I'm hoping that maybe I can arrange something and somehow get Blackheath hockey club involved.......I'll keep you posted!

BOEHC: When and where is the first game?
[b]SM:
We have just found out that both the Men and Ladies Squad will be playing an Exhibition match on Good Friday (14th April) at Folkestone Hockey Club. This is the first of many!
