Anyone for 'beach' hockey?

Herne Bay and a 3.30 push back is the kind of fixture that sorts the men from the boys. But as usual there was not only a full squad prepared to go but even extras to offer support! A team of the new, the trusted and the young stepped onto the pitch in high spirits.

The game began at as a high pace as the pitch would allow. Although a little scrappy, it soon settled. BOE had the bulk of the possession but lacked in executing the final pass. This was made difficult by the amount of sand on the pitch but it was the same for both teams and we needed to adapt during the game. The breakthrough came midway through the first half with young Will skinning a defender and slipping to Ollie. First blood!! The pattern continued with BOE giving a fine display but getting caught a few times on the break. The first half ended one a piece with Romans only real touch of the ball being to pick it out of the net following a stunning strike from the Herne Bay forward - no reflection on Roman, top keepers would have struggled to stop that one.

The second half showed more of the BOE spirit with lessons being learnt and the final pass getting stronger. Football rules however seemed to enter this period of the game. With a Herne Bay defender sliding across the goalmouth to stop the ball on the line the chance was for BOE to take the lead again. Ollie stepped up but it was high and straight and the keeper parried it out with his face. Ollie, hopeful that football rules were still in play, tried to bury the rebound but was thwarted by the umpire's whistle. Down the other end in the last ten minutes, chaos reigned as a wack into the D (deflected off Joni's dangling stick) looped in over everyone's head and was volleyed from close range at Roman, who pulled off a Joe Hart stylie reaction save but the rebound finally crept over the line. Heads did not drop and BOE continued in fine style till the final whistle and were unlucky to not have a share of the points.

An excellent team performance. Special mentions to Leverton Snr and Jnr for fine performances (with young Will narrowly missing out on man of the match) and Sam Hannon for shedding the pads and putting in a fine outfield performance.
Man of the match shared between our two new boys Matt McGee and Mikael. Outstanding showing guys.

Thanks finally to Herne Bay for a most enjoyable game and for being excellent social hosts with a most fine chilli to boot !!! Many thanks to Tom Cooper for coming on to Herne Bay after his match and to Stephen Gilbert for being the "Kent Chauffeur" for the afternoon. It's these guys that make the games possible.

We look forward to the dynamos bagging their first points of the season, and for seeing how Herne Bay respond to a slicker pitch in the reverse fixture.
