Girls U10s only BE squad to get a team out on Whiteout Weekend
Freezing rain? Pah!
Sevenoaks, Canterbury and Tunbridge Wells as opposition? Whatever!
Selection chaos and rejigged teams? Bring it on! Nothing stops the BEHC girls u10 horde from playing hockey (well, apart from cancelled tournaments in Marden...)
Two teams made their way to Sevenoaks to take part. One more experienced group and one containing two debutants: Amelia Huggett taking a confident and assertive goal keeping bow and Daisy Jones showing plenty of potential at centre-forward in her first game for BE.
This group played some attractive hockey in their opening games, with neat interplay in midfield and defence: Betty Barber, Tilly Stafford, Olivia Murphy and Isabel Clarke making some tidy patterns in possession.
The lack of an early forward pass meant that the team was often under pressure however and the first game resulted in a narrow defeat.
Once Emma Anderson decided to set aside her team jester role and concentrate on her passing, a more regular flow of attacking opportunities resulted from her and Olivia's excellent distribution. Now Amelie Willis was able to threaten the opposition defence, while Daisy slid a good breakaway chance inches wide of the goal and into the snow drift beyond.
The good hockey continued, although unfortunately without any goals. Apart from a couple of back flops, Amelia was virtually unbeatable in goal. Final results three (narrow) defeats and three 0-0 draws.
In the more experienced group, a little experimenting was required due to the absence of regular forwards. Grace Taylor and Petra King bravely stepped up against some tough opponents. Some sterling efforts from Libby & Tabitha in midfield, solid defending from Frankie & Sybelle and marvellous saves from Penny in goal kept the team in touch in their early games, with a couple of draws and defeats.
Finally Petra broke the goal scoring drought in the penultimate game, earning the team a well deserved win for their efforts.
Perhaps tiredness, over-confidence or early-stage hypothermia finally took its toll on the last game immediately after - the only one-sided loss to a very strong Canterbury team. As ever, always lots of useful lessons in defeat.
It was, as usual a pleasure to coach this irrepressible bunch. We look forward to the Kent tournament in a couple of weeks.
