A surprisingly chilly Saturday in March saw the big battle for 7th place with Maidstone coming to the meadow. BOE were on a good run of form having won their last 2 but Maidstone were unbeaten in 4 so it was always going to be a tight game. The game started well with BOE playing the ball around nicely. That was until a decision went against Michael Lawrence who tried to volley the ball at the umpire from 2 yards away, he later claimed he was always trying to miss the ball – an event everyone saw clearly as he took a full swing. Somewhat unfortunately BOE went behind when a fairly scrappy bit of play ended up with the Maidstone player volleying it in. BOE fought back with a lovely flowing team move from CB to right half across to Ferg “the CEO” on his farewell game. Ferg then drove across the top of the D through not round just through 3 or 4 defenders before getting a shot off that Dave Lawrence was on hand to deflect in.
The game carried on in this see-saw fashion with Mike L and Dave L both scoring to put BOE 2-1 up then 3-2 up but Maidstone kept sneaking back into the game. The final act of the game was a miraculous save on the line from the Maidstone defender from a Mike L flick. A decent point but 3 were definitely on the table.
Mom Dave – two goals and great work rate
Dod Wobbly Wyatt – missing his attempted cover drive out of the pitch – he was trying to hit it unlike Mike earlier in the game.
