1st XI SHOW FIGHT IN PULSATING 4-4 THRILLER

Some high pressing led by an energetic forward line forced numerous turnovers which Blackheath were able to take advantage of via one Chris Harden flick and another Dave Lawrence deflection from Tom Harden’s diagonal ball. The boys were not quite able to keep up the intensity and the individual skills of the Guildford boys began to cause problems. A short corner and an interception from their centre forward brought the scores to 2-2 going into half time.

The team could have been deflated after an outstanding first 20 minutes but rallied together and imposed themselves on the game once more. Some predatory instincts from Joe Allen saw him getting a shot off on the turn and the deflection fell into Chris Harden’s path to push into the net. End to end, the pace did not relent. Another Guildford short found its way into the net and a breakaway from Blackheath saw Chris Harden make it 4-3 with 10 to play. Despite a monumental effort to hold on, some ill-discipline led to only 9 being left on the pitch and the resolute defence eventually cracked with 60 seconds to play. 4-4 at full time. It was disappointing not to get the win but a huge improvement from last weekend and a level that the boys must build from as we move into the second half of the season.
