Missed opportunities and a stoical Sevenoaks deny top boys maximum points

Blackheath travelled to Sevenoaks on Saturday with confidence in their step having welcomed back the centre defence partnership of Tom Archer and Ben Wyatt.

Special guest in attendance in the form of the Captains Mother meant a top class performance was required.

5 Mins prior to the game starting, we were thinking less hockey and more swimming with a biblical scale downpour upon us.

The match started well and BOE soon got into the swing of things and dominated most of the opening play. Shorts corners were come by and dispatched well by the SC team, unfortunately, the Sevenoaks keeper clearly had lots of Weetabix in the morning because we could have beaten a brick wall with greater ease!

Half time came and went with the score still 0 – 0. Half time talk of keeping going and it will come were accepted but unfortunate to hear as we should have finished numerous chances in the first half.

First blood, against the run of play, went to Sevenoaks from a scrappy short corner. 1-0 down. Time to step up!!!

With the game running into its final third, BOE 1 - 0 down, it was time to turn it up and get going.

With the back line camped on the half way line, BOE piled the pressure on and used every available outlet to create more and more chances, but nothing was coming, balls off the line, inches wide, fumbled saves all contributing to a growing frustration in the BOE camp.

But cometh the hour cometh the man. Mike Lawrence picked the ball up on the right hand side top D, drove across it and despatched a venomous rocket of a reverse hit into the top left hand corner of the goal...not bad….not bad at all. A little less Barcelona and a lot more shoot on sight produced a truly fantastic goal from our boy Lawrence.

8 mins to go, and BOE went for the kill, pushing harder and harder up the field and really piling on the pressure in search of our winner. Much credit to Sevenoaks who kept us out with some good, solid defending.

A shame but a result that shows Sevenoaks are not worthy of their league position, teams will struggle against a well drilled side. BOE however further cemented their mantel as the team to beat this year.

A week off next week so much needed rest for the boys, then its Kings Alleyns away, a side that came down this year and are showing some very good results, another big test for BOE but one we welcome with open arms.

MOM - Dunners (made a save)
DOD - Lewis (we say he missed, he said it went over the line)
