An excellent performance ends in disappointment as the 2s fail to convert a myriad of chances

A cold wet day with a disappointing result...

After a long wet drive into Marden, we arrived with time to spare before the game. Archibald having slept all the way on the trip down, the mood in the car was feeling positive. Something to do with cookies and heated seats as our pre-pre-match warm up I’m sure.

With a reluctance to step out into the cold and wet grey sky, we soon shook it off with an encouraging warm up. Once again another strong 2nd team lining up for the start of the match with dynamite subs on the bench.

The 1st half was often scrappy with signs of frustration building. With confusing rules regarding ‘the aerial’, Marden quickly made use of this, winning two short corners. After James Florence had saved the first shot, BOE failed to clear the pads in time and conceded two goals from rebounded second phase shots on goal. Edd Thorogood then stepped up when needed and smashed one past from open play to keep BOE hopes alive. The game felt like it was turning in our favour.

Half Time – Marden lead 2-1.

Listening to another positive half time talk, we all believed we could turn it around for the win. There were some moments of wizard-like stick skills from Tristan Lacon-Allin and a flawless performance from Andrew Slack in the middle of the park, showing everyone how to do the simple things perfectly.

With tempers building as the game was slipping away, the umpire ‘overhearing’ chat from the dugout 50ft’ away, resulting in a yellow card for Marly Jones on the bench, thus Captain Prem Marwaha was removed from play for 5 minutes. As the game progressed, BOE conceded another 2 goals on the break.

With eight short corners and a couple of efforts sailing agonisingly past the post, perhaps we should have got something more from the game? However, a fine display from James Clarke, who slotted home yet another short corner, made the scoreline a bit more respectable. Better luck when we meet next for the home game against Ashford.

Final score:
Marden Russets 1st XI 4-2 Blackheath 2nd XI

MOTM- Andrew Slacky: a flawless, outstanding performance

DOTD- Marly Jones: Being sent off (From the bench!)
