Having had a week off and training effected by snow, a rusty 2nd XI managed to hang on for all 3 points away at Holcombe.....

Its never easy to miss a week, then not train and then play away from home. From start to finish this was almost the perfect performance...………..almost.

For 70 minutes BEHC would pass the ball around nicely, creating space and the movement up top go the team into some excellent scenarios. The final pass or finish was lacking its cutting edge that on another day would see BEHC score 3/4 more. As it was it was down to a 2nd half penalty save from Nathan 'The Daddy' Bullens that helped us out with all 3 points.

The early exchanges went all BE's way with some good break down play and exciting attacks, that would result in either a short corner or some how, an opposition free hit.

The deadlock was broken on the 18 minute mark when a neat break down the right saw Chris Fowler pick out Marly Jones and the Norfolk menace did the rest with a cheeky finish in the bottom corner. A right tonic for Marly having spent the whole week cleaning hand bags and scrubbing carpets.

Then came two golden opportunities to seal the game, both falling to the teams top goal scorer but neither resulting in the desired crowd cheer. First Slack would send Thorogood in on the 45 of the D, the forward would negotiate enough space to beat the keeper but not enough purchase on the push that crept towards goal, only to be cleared at the 2nd attempt by the covering defender off the line. More power and it would have been 2-0.

The second chance was almost identical, the ball coming from the left this time after 'Chief Sneak' Gurpreet Purewal robbed the right winger of the ball, and probably all his secrets, to locate Josh, who threaded the ball to Thorogood once again. The forward had to lead out right to get the pass and was closed down early by the keeper, thoughts of 'smash it' where considered but again he want on the roll round. Fair play to the GK this time as he got a good stick to the ball and as the forward and GK reached the base line, the resulting ball across was both forced and ineffective. Two golden opportunities. 2 misses - plenty of DOTD votes...…

The second half yielded much of the same, attack, attack attack and we saw some of the best of Danyon Bateman and his wizard of Oz skills. Numeruos times the young Aussie would beat 3/4 players only for it to result in nothing or a corner, and then nothing.

There were 4 other golden moments that resulted nothing but promised plenty. A neat move from Bateman put Fowler in the box seat, but the Happy Hammer got the ball stuck under his feet and the defence cleared. Dr Slack and Olly both got in super positions on the 45 with players free at the back post, possibly shots could have been crosses on another day, but both would have burst the goal if on target and then a potential moment of redemption for the much maligned centre forward. As Ivens smashed the ball in, Thorogood got in front of his defender for a cheeky deflection, going bottom corner, at pace, turns to celebrate, only for the impish GK to sprawl across the goal and pull off an absolute worldie………

The defining moment came after a massive goal mouth scramble and plenty of bodies on the floor, resulting in a penalty stroke for Holcombe. Needless to say Nate did the rest to keep us at 1-0 and save the 3 points.

Tough home game against Gore Court this week...…..need to fire up...…

MOTM - Nath - saved our bacon
DOTD - Edd - not on point enough
