This Saturday saw the Heathens travel to Old Willis in their final pre-season friendly before the big kick off next week. Playing against a side a league below the Heathens were never really threatened and would end up dominating the game from the outset.
The early stages saw early chances come and go for the Heathens, but eventually the deadlock would be broken around the 15min mark, when the returning Umpire Sec David Wells would flick one from a short into the top left. (This was as good as the drag flicking got). Almost two minutes later, however, they were nearly caught out as they pressed, with the opposition forcing a smart save and clearance from Sam Hannon in practically his only touch of the match.
The status quo returned thereafter, with heavy Heathens pressure resulting in a second ten minutes later after a cracking little deflected flick over the keeper by Man of the Match Matthew Soames. It was three shortly before the break with newbie Matthew Wells smashing a fantastic cover drive home to leave the keeper no chance, and there was nearly a fourth with a minute left, when Hollywood passes from the skipper and Mr Hollywood himself (David Wells) saw Oli Payne hit the post, cue head in the hands moments all round.
3-0 at the break and comfortable, the Heathens skipper wanted a demolition job. It didn't quite happen, however more chances followed. The order gets a bit fuzzy... there was a disallowed goal and a flick which could have been given, but there was a goal too, with Matthew Soames getting his 2nd after what we'll call a variation on a short corner injection.
No further addition to the score, but the Heathens were in complete control. Perhaps that's why they were guilty of getting a bit selfish and trying to do too much. A good defensive performance from Ravi Wickramasuriya and James Goldsmith and solid performances all over the pitch. Cheers to Matt Wilde for umpiring too.
Well done lads! Yes, it was a game we should have won, but we won it well! More improvements to be made, but let's take this forward to next week and start our league campaign well.
