Ice finally melts in SE London, giving the 5s a long awaited win

So finally the second half of the season was under way!!
Previous games cancelled due to the might of the British winter. Even Paddys beard could not sweep the snow away, although in hindsight we could have laid it out across the pitch on the Friday night and it would have been like a 13 tog quilt !!!!

So the fives came out of the blocks all guns blazing. Fresh memories of their massive performance against the heathens (where the 1-5 defeat was not a fair reflection of the game) clear in their minds, along with sergeant Whitneys new favourite saying - speed of mind, speed of body. However with a few weeks of no games and no training speed of mind did not communicate exactly in time with speed of body. We were a little rusty. The hockey was still good, it just wasn't quite Carling !!!!!!!

Having said that the fives were completely dominant in the first half. Holcombe were not a bad side, with young and old giving a good balance to their team, but the fives just overran them. They made the odd penetration into our half and Damo had to make one save, but apart from that it was the fives all the way. Short corners are becoming more and more formidable in our arsenal as the weeks go on, and from one of these the scoring was opened as the maestro Mulvanny buried one into the backboard with extreme venom.

The second half started and once again the fives slipped off the pedal for a while, strangely, and Holcombe got themselves back in it levelling the score and nearly taking the lead. But resilience and determination and it was all back on. As Holcombe started to crumble under the relentless pressure and pace of the fives the game became more and more one sided. Zac delved deep into his pocket containing crucial goals and after being given too much time in the D (allegedly he had time to slip off the side of the pitch and grab a cuppa) there it was, a tidy flick into the back of the net and the lead was restored.

Next up was hit man Thorns. In his last game for the fives before hitting the sunny shores of Oz, he pops up and gives a trademark deflection sailing past the keeper. 3-1 and a fine farewell for our beloved team sec.

Finally, with Holcombe on their knees and delving into Paul Newmans Slapshot tactical book, the cream on the cake fell to sergeant Whitney.
Some say it was a goal of legends
Some say he beat 10 men
If it hadn't gone in, some would have said greedy ***#**!!!!!!
Personally speaking, nutmegging the goalie from 6inches off the baseline was a fine moment!!

So the fives chalk up another win, and this time convert more of their chances and get a more respectable score line. We are building and building and I'm sure we will peak at the crucial time.

Notable performances from Ross Ainley and Zac, but both were thwarted once again to Man of the Match by Chris "go gadget arms" Lovell

Excellent performance all
Safe travels Cameron
