In The Battle for Avery Hill

So once again the old foes faced each other.
Gravesham having slightly the upper hand, sitting on top of the league and knowing that in our encounter in the first half of the season they were the victors, when we just did not turn up.

But as in many wars, a secret weapon has been unleashed that has changed the course of the of that war.
The Gatlin Gun, The Atomic Bomb, The Unknown Forward !!!

The game began with the Fives having the early pressure and barely 2 minutes in and a through ball was deflected by the unknown forward, but it was wide as he had not had time to adjust his sights properly. Then the game evened, with both sides playing excellent hockey and carving out super opportunites, all thwarted by excellent keepers at both ends. Morton was the busier of the two in the first half making save sfter outstanding save, but was eclipsed by the Gravesham keeper who made an incredible save from a Bayliss tomahawk.

The second half began with the Fives resolved to continue what they were doing, but spreading the ball quicker. it could go either way.
Then a freak accident occured leaving Matt with a blood injury and an extra vertical mouth !! driven off to hospital by Mr G (thank you sir) the fives were reduced to 12 but with plenty in the tank it was all to play for. Then Gravesham took the lead.
Heads up boys, its all to play for.
And the heads did stay up. Both sides giving their all, playing absolutely superbly, building the tension on the sidelines to fever pitch.
And then it happened.
As Nostradamus predicted.
The planets aligned
The fives became legends in the great battle for Avery Hill.
A reverse strike across the D from the bi-line takes a deflection and flies across the goal at shoulder height. Somehow it is deflected into the roof of the net and its all even, with 8 mins to play.
The battle continues at a frenzied pace and with 2 mins to go the fives are defending a short corner. Morton is there again and the fives take possession. The attack continues and a through ball into the D at speed is aimed at the unknown forward. This time his sights are aligned and a neat deflection between his legs and its all over !! 2 -1 in the dying seconds and Gravesham are in shock.

What an absolutely fantastic game of hockey.

I must express our thanks to Gravesham, for over the last couple of seasons we have had some epic battles. What began as needle games a were at times a bit "tasty", have now evolved into great games of hockey between two well matched sides, played hard and fair with just enough needle !!!

Thanks to both umpires for their time and effort, always appreciated.

Thanks to Mr Gilbert for tending to Matts injuries and getting him safely to the hospital.

Thanks also to all the Fives. Each and every one gave their all in what has to be so far the game of the season !!
Outstanding gentlemen
