"Paddygate" !!!!

So the last game of the season saw a trip to Holcombe, and a fiesty encounter !!

The order of the day was to enjoy, enjoy and enjoy, and of course win !!!!

Once again the fives, as they have all season, had the upper hand and were dominant throughout the game. once again sparkling hockey was played, which often bewildered the opposition. Our pace and intelligent hockey was soon paying off with consistent pressure and a few flurries in the D. Midway through the first half the unknown forward struck again and the fives were on the road. But with plenty of verbal and a lot of sly physical moves going on it was not going to be easy. 1-0 at the break.

The second half was similar in format. Blackheath dominant but missing chance after chance, the unknown forward being the main culprit and at one point deciding to get intimate with the goal post rather than sticking the ball in the net. Holcombe did have their moments, but as ever Morton was superb and parried and cleared with relative ease.

Then came the moment. The fives mantra "speed of mind, speed of body" came into operation. Side line ball, immediately taken, swept across the pitch into the D, shot on target, saved, rebound, smack, 2-0 !! Most of the Holcombe boys were still stood still as young Tom, who when asked if he was ok to go up front shrugged his shoulders and said "yeah it should be ok", was the man to take the honours. But as so often has happened this year we dont keep tight in these situations and with a rare run at goal Holcombe slotted in and it was a game again.

A couple of unsavoury moments slightly soured the day with our boys being the gentlemen of the situation, which was good to see. "Paddygate" was the most out of order with our man being struck across the back of the legs well after the ball had gone. With the oppo claiming it was not intentional, the viewers on the sidelines were of a different opinion and a ten minute conference with the umpire ensued.
Again we walked away with choice words and insults ringing in our ears, which is a shame as they had a couple of very young but very talented lads on their team who should not be educated in this way. The video evidence is now being analysed and maybe CNN will anounce a possible impeachement of their player !!!!

But enough of "Paddygate". We are 2-1 up and its not over. We are pressing now, letting our hockey do the talking. lets score number 3 "Farrant Style" !!! young Tom again. Recieving the ball back to goal, on the reverse side, unbalanced, swivels, then while falling slots home into the far corner !!!! Outstanding !!!! Then for the final ten minutes the rest of the team slung balls at Tom willing that hatrick which was finally denied as Tom was just outside of the D on his own against the goalie and the full time whistle was blown !! Outragious !!

Again a first class performance from the fives. As a team we can hold our head high and look forward to next season.

Man of the Match was a shared affair. Young Louis Brown having a sterling game at the back and of course young Tom Farrant leading the way up front. These two young men have featured for the fives a few times this season now and have shown that they are both more than capable of holding their own in the team. We look forward to next season and watching these youngsters rise through the ranks. Well done boys

Thanks to the umpires for keeping control of a very fiesty game. Looking back we could probably say that most of the decisions were correct, and in an age when it can be far too easy to recieve a green card, we can see the plus side of not issuing them. It is definately a tough gig and one where you are not going to please all the people all of the time, so again guys, thanks for your time and your efforts, they are always much appreciated
