First league game of the 2023/24 season and Blackheath ladies 1s were feeling confident having played Sevenoaks and drawn 2-2 in a preseason friendly.
A thankfully cooler day than the preseason one, Blackheath got off to a good start matching Sevenoaks in pace and soaking up pressure well.
Blackheath moved the ball around well and put a number of balls across the goal mouth but couldn’t find the back of the net. Sevenoaks were quick on the counterattack and were awarded a couple of short corners but could not break the deadlock. 0-0 at half time.
Sevenoaks started the second half with a bit more intensity and an attack down their left wing resulted in a goal mouth scramble to keep the ball out but with the ball spinning in their favour it crossed the line to open the scoring. 0-1 to Sevenoaks.
Bitterly disappointed Blackheath tried to keep their heads but Sevenoaks had the momentum & shortly after deflected the ball into the goal after another attack down their left. 0-2.
Blackheath tried to rally but turned the ball over too many times & Sevenoaks again found themselves in Blackheath’s D - and after a scrabble with the GK were awarded a hotly contested penalty flick. Sarah MB stepped up to the mark and cooly saved the attempt. This put the fire in Blackheath’s belly and the momentum shifted. Blackheath held on to possession longer and attacked more aggressively. Annie entered the D, put a short pass through to Amelia who placed the ball into the goal. 1-2 - Blackheath finally on the scoreboard.
Blackheath created more and more chances and a short corner in the dying minutes of the games would surely bring them level but it wasn’t to be and time ran out.
L1s first loss in an opening league match in many years but whilst there are improvements to be made, there are still many positives to take from the game.
