Blackheath &Elthamians L1 2v2 Holcombe 1a’s

Blackheath had a great warm up prior to their clash with top of the table Holcombe, thanks to Charlie’s pump up session. On a grey day, the umpire’s coordinated outfit helped to light the way to an impressive 9th minute goal for captain fantastic Sue. Holcombe’s goalie was powerless to stop her beautiful deflection into the back of the net from Jilly’s pass (shot – it was going in – honest). Blackheath had the upper hand for most of the first half with great interceptor work from Sally and magnificent running from Jenna, back from recent illness. Blackheath had 2 goals disallowed – Jenna forgot we weren’t playing football and Holcombe’s own goal from Emma’s cross was ruled out.
The defence coped well with Holcombe’s high positioning. They mopped up several short corners with Ceri trying to style out a foot injury unsuccessfully. Sarah MB made some great saves – reading the short corners and logging like a very nimble lumberjack. Holcombe stole a goal back and then another – a great deflection goal. Blackheath dug in and pick their game up again. There was lovely interplay between the Brown sisters and both Emmas hassled the Holcombe defence relentlessly. Sue seemed to develop an issue with a hole in the bottom of her stick and Sian decided to have a little chat with the umpire about elbows. Despite all of this, Blackheath’s pressure paid off and Hannah scored to make it 2-2 with a dreamy drag flick.
