Merry Merry Merry Christmas

For the last match before the Christmas break, BEHC Ladies 1s were looking to put the defeat of last week behind them, and make a return to their previous form of winning the odd game and getting a lot of draws. Standing in their way was the only remaining unbeaten team in the league, Kings Alleyn's.

The pre game team talk focused on starting strongly, and not looking like they had been out the night before. The team were quick to put this request into action, and were 3-0 up within the first 15 minutes. It could have been more, as an early shot from Sally bounced off the post. Shortly after, some intricate skills from Hannah 'more Brown than usual' lead to the ball being deflected in by Sue. Next, an inch perfect diagonal pass from Hannah found Charlie at the top of the D, who calmly slotted the ball between the keeper's legs for goal number two. Sue then deflected in another ball from Sian to double her tally and bring the score to 3-0.

After the initial shock that BEHC were actually playing well, Kings managed to apply some pressure and goalkeeper Sarah and the defence were kept busy, including a dramatic clearance off the line by Kate, via an unfortunate opposition player's face. Kings pulled a goal back, but towards the end of the half BEHC's confidence was high enough to transfer the ball continuously around the back, although Kate and Ceri did eventually allow some other players to join in. This was the best hockey he had seen all season, according to coach Jade.

Something must have been said at half time, as Kings came out as a different team, and attacked relentlessly. After countless short corners and saves by Sarah and the defence, Kings scored another to make the score 3-2 and BEHC started to feel their customary end of game nervousness. They did have a few opportunities to increase their lead, including when Emma H received the ball in D and turned and dribbled around the keeper, but the ball ended up just wide. The final result was 3-2, and BEHC go into the break comfortably in 3rd place in the league.
