Blackheath Ladies 2nd X1 V Gillingham
Pre-match preps were like the audition for Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Darkened, swollen flesh scarred from the previous week’s match peeped under, through and over kit. Coughs and snivels punctuated the tactics exchange. Beth dragged a gammy knee about pitch side and Sandie stayed at home nursing all manner of symptoms-Get Well Soon!
It has been a gruelling season.
But as the game started there were poached and slapped balls aplenty as Blackheath played the league winners for a dignified end to their season. What started quite quickly with a Gillingham goal soon turned into a long bout of such matched skill and determination, all players appeared truly possessed. Blackheath had to keep G’ham from earning short corners (their modus to victory). 3 corners later and G’ham were ahead but were also stunned by Blackheath’s performance. A brilliant attack team kept them busy as Kate scored their first deserved goal. Another goal was disallowed by a jittery umpire who agreed she should have played advantage and others were rebuffed by G’ham’s goalie.
The mid’s and defence were superb with goalie Beccs on top form. Blackheath played like an orchestra approaching the finale but maintaining it throughout. Ably conducted by the inexhaustible Nat, the show was a winner despite the score, a pleasure to be a part of and such a proud moment to share. Well done everyone.
Final score Gillingham won 3-1.
Karen gained Minion status again whilst Kate deserved her Man of the Match.
