Blackheath Ladies 2nd 1X V Ashford
The sun shone, the BBQ sizzled and temperatures pitch-side rose a few degrees higher than average as Blackheath started their first match of the season at College meadow.
From the whistle, Blackheath swamped Ashford in a wash of new-season determination, skill and fitness with a tiny splash of over-excitement. Things soon calmed down and the goals which were earlier rebuffed by Ashford’s excellent goalkeeper, started to hit the spot; Netty securing a great goal from runs afar, Rachael hitting in two superb shots, Gina scoring two, one after hitting out and then hitting in Karen’s great hit from a short, then Karen’s possible goal of the season, as she found the only gap the goalie hadn’t covered at an angle Pythagorus would have invented had he known it possible! The stunning efforts of all of the Blackheath defence in stopping any Ashford attack, meant they could enjoy the fruits of their hard labours and watch the goals mount up. It was an immense team effort under hot conditions, well supported and rewarded with promotion-securing points and more importantly, Nat’s chocolate cake.
Netty was awarded Man-o-t-Match for non-stop brilliant effort and Karen was awarded Olaf’s furry pelt for reasons yet unknown but vote rigging may have ensured she could take it home to wear it, alone, on a Saturday night, with wine and candles……..
