Calm before the storm

It was the calm before the storm. Storm Ciara. The 2s started their Saturdays in the lovely sunny Sittingbourne. A fierce team talk took place first of all where crucial team tactics were discussed (top secret!). This was shortly followed by a pleasant 0.6km jog around the site as the beginning of our warm up. Some dynamic stretches on the netball courts certainly loosened up our joints and muscles before we took to the pitch. As soon as we were on pitch side the relay races and shooting drills commenced. All in preparation for the game ahead. The 2s were determined and ready to face the current league leaders, Gore Court.

The whistle blew and so the game commenced. From the start we knew Gore Court were going to go out strong. But we were prepared. Or so we thought. A couple of errors on our part and sheer force of one of the Gore Court ladies hits meant we conceded not 1 but 3 goals in the first half. Gore Court also did a good job at using their body parts to stop the ball on the line, leading to a penalty flick! Lucy took on the mighty challenge. Unfortunately the umpire faffed for 5 minutes and the goalie was busy doing a haka which psyched Lucy out. We therefore ended the first half 3-0 down.

Half time talk was high spirited. “We can do this” the 2s captain, Hannah, exclaimed. Everyone agreed. We had it in us. It was a very evenly matched game. We were still in the game....

The second half whistle blew. We applied pressure and pushed up which lead to us gaining a short corner. After a couple of previous short corners, we had it sussed. A ping pong did the trick and Hannah secured our first goal. The team were elated! This was it! We were going to make our comeback. Soon Gore Court returned the favour and also secured another goal off a short corner. It was now 4-1 but we weren’t giving up just yet. Within the last few minutes the team secured another short corner. A cheeky right slip to left post had the goalie all confused where Penny managed to secure the second goal. The end whistle was blown only seconds later. The final score was 4-2, however we walked away with our heads high, happy to secure the 2-1 win in the second half. Player of the match was awarded to Zoe for her awesome saves! Thanks for coming was awarded to Penny for her slight malfunction in the wardrobe department.
