A disappointing result but by no means a disappointing game

To set the scene, despite being end of October, Blackheath 3s turned up to play on a day that was like mid-summer. We were a confident side having played well in the previous weeks and taken on board the tricks and advice given to us during training.

The game was clearly in Blackheath’s power from the get go with brilliant passes spanning across the pitch and the overall movement of the ball between players showing a great use of space from the home side as they held possession easily.

Herne Bay flooded the D with players in order to defend against the constant attack of Blackheath and while many shots were near misses, the first break came from a short corner awarded to Blackheath which Sue put away with a direct and powerful shot putting Blackheath 1-0 up.

The game continued with the same dynamics for much of the first half, with Blackheath pushing heavily on the attack but without any luck; despite a great attempt from Captain Socks from another short corner. Herne Bay got their own break with the help of their speedy players down the wing who were just too fast for Blackheath to catch up with, levelling the score just before the half time whistle.

In the second half, there was a lull in Blackheath’s strength which unfortunately allowed Herne Bay to put away another two shots bringing the score to 3-1.

After this short lapse, Blackheath pulled themselves back to their full strength and with excellent work from Nic, Emma, Socks and JoJo in mid field who made an incredibly strong line which was near impenetrable for Herne Bay keeping the play in our own attacking half. For her constant running and strength in mid field, Nic was given man of the match.

While Blackheath continued to up the pressure, shots were made increasingly difficult by the sheer number of blue shirts standing in the D. At one point 9 of the opposition were in their own defending half. This led to yet another short corner that once again, Sue put away with ease.

With the score at 3-2, the final whistle came. And although a disappointing result, it was by no means a disappointing game as Blackheath were strong throughout with great game play and passes and a constant drive forwards.
