Result: 1 – 0 to Gillingham 2’s

With Carmel in charge and the sun shining it all looked very promising – apart from the fact that we were players down. Happily Gillingham were equally so but they did have their umpire. Alaine stepped up and offered to umpire until Annette arrived hot foot from Meopham.
The game started well with Blackheath in the opposition’s half consistently and driving at goal. Despite repeated attempts to score by almost every player on the forward line every attempt seemed to be thwarted by one very substantial defender and their keeper. Gillingham did have some breaks down the pitch and in one very determined attempt to score they achieved their mission due to Angela being almost immobilised by an overstretched ‘glut’ and the ball finding the gap.
After half time the pressure was on to equalise and support from rolling subs and fairly fresh feet gave added impetus but to no avail. So despite at least 25+ attempts to score the game was lost 1-0.
There were some interesting tactics in defence from Gillingham – stick hooking was one which led to some heated moments. But the best was probably the keeper’s physical grip on Carmel to prevent her certainly scoring. A penalty flick was awarded which we were unable to convert. Blackheath players on the side line including some 2’s queried the umpire’s decision (having referred to their rule books) not to send the goalkeeper off for such a blatant foul. The umpire’s response was to say that he did not want to ‘destroy’ the friendly spirit of the game by such a drastic decision!! So why do we have rules??
A game we could and should have won but the team could not have played harder. Thanks to: the 2’s who could not have supported more loudly on the side-line (it was great to have supporters), to Carmel for organising us, to Marion for the sandwiches and cakes, to Annette who rushed back to umpire and for the team who played with such determination.
So here’s to next week and success. Meanwhile I’m finding it very difficult to sit down, drive or move anywhere fast due to the intense pain in my b--!
