A reflection on triangles – or a special feature on The Talented Kirsty Glew

The 3rd team’s season has started with a bundle of enthusiasm, plenty of subs on the bench but not enough goals on the scorecard. Sadly, on average, for every goal we have scored, our opposition have scored six. It may not come as a surprise to note that most of our games have been lost in the last 15 minutes. Experts in the field of hockey will understand this to be due to a lethal combination of lack of training and lack of fitness. (Not you Lucy, Beth and Emma!) But is it? The triangles we weave up and down the pitch are, at times, impressive; but during the last 15 minutes of the game, our minds turn to a different kind of triangle. Kirsty Glew’s sandwiches!

The combination of cheese, ham or both takes our minds to the post-match tea table, groaning with delicacies. The delicious home-made gooey thing, oozing with cheese, ham, garlic and onion waiting for bread to be dipped and slurped, leave the mini sausages and sausage rolls in the shade. Home-made chocolate brownies, with light butter icing complete the post-match tea, much to the delight of the opposition, as our minds wander and the ball slams in to the back of the goal.

What talent this Glew woman has for, at short notice, she can also step into the goalkeeping kit with alacrity. Or should I say, in a bit of a struggle but with Angela’s assistance she made it eventually. With no sandwiches to make this week Glew had time to throw herself around the goal and issue confident orders to the defence as the game progressed. But like Pavolov’s dog, in the last 15 minutes, the wandering team mind has taken its toll on our away games too.

Fitness and training ladies. Fitness and training. The triangles will look after themselves.

Prepared by Daphne Clifton. LB, RB, CH, RH and one goal under her belt.
