Steve "Stickey" Bowles vents his frustration for not playing competitive hockey for two years with 5 goals

(Tim Walters aka Scribe is STILL away)
Yes, it’s true the Highwaymen have scored 15 goals in two games! That’s almost as many as the rest of the season put together.
What’s changed. Last week it was Ali Burnett who gave the team confidence and showed we can all score goals.

This week – no Ali – but an old foot-pad who used to play at Wapping HC and is now our U10 Girls Coach - Steve “Stickey” Bowles made his Club debut and led by example with 5 quality goals. It was a glorious return to the game after a frustrating two year absence due to a long-term ankle injury.

Despite this outstanding performance in front of his family, his wife and daughters (all Blackheath players), Steve didn’t end up as Man of The Match. That accolade went to Tom Davies who played the role of playmaker – in attack and defence – and was rewarded with the eighth stylish goal.

Simon scored for the second consecutive week. He too only returned last week after 18 months of injury. He too had a great game despite being in strong contention for a jug for “Goal Avoidance”.

Jamie Rendell played the best he has done this season with great energy and command of the left wing.

We benefited from a below par opposition who had distinct opportunities but were ineffective in their finishing. This takes nothing away from the defence of Tom C, Phil, Chris, Richard and Dylan who were always there to cover.

Ravi should be mentioned for scoring from the worst bobbling miss hit from the top of the D – but a goal’s a goal.

Despite the obvious superiority we had there was no ill will from Folkestone, after we explained that Steve was not a 'ringer' but that we were as surprised as they were how good he was. Having never seen him play it was meant to be a gentle return back but sadly for Folkestone they got a super charged and eager Steve!

So, lots to take from our ability to play well – even without Mr. There is merit, however, in the Highwayman practicing short corners. We had 8 attempts and no goals – that puts our stats at circa 40+ attempts and only 3 goals this season!

Thanks to Seneka and Rhys for umpiring with a light touch. Indeed there was no arguing or comment about their decisions from either squad.

Squad: Chris Bernard, Peter Robinson, Phil Kinch, Ravi Wickramasuriya, Richard Cleall, Sammy Chana, Stephen Garth, Stephen Gilbert (capt), Tom Conway, Tom Davies, Jamie Rendell, Dylan Smulders, Simon McDonald and Steve Bowles
