A score line of 1 all seemed like a satisfactory end to a competitive and good humoured game. Again the Vets squad wasn’t a full squad of true Vets – half term and injuries meant we called upon Ben and Dan from the 5s (who did not have a game) and Stu and Matt W to provide cover.
The Vets start was solid only for a goal from the opposition’s first short corner to put a blot on the Vets performance. Fortunately, the most perfect goal in the second half brought the game level – a perfect pass from David H to Ben into the right corner, followed by an inch perfect pass to Aidan in the D to slot the ball home. In truth the goal was a great relief as Aidan had been spraying shots around the goal all of the game and on one occasion hitting the post.
On balance the Vets had more of the game than the opposition but we were unable to make the most of the open play or short corner opportunities.
Maybe for once we were not aggressive enough – this was reflected by Mark’s comment that it was one of the quietest games he has ever umpired!
Thanks go to Mark, Ben, Dan, Stu and Matt (for his verbal and physical presence on the pitch).
