Vets put out an unusual squad even for the Vets and were found lacking by Gore Court. It shouldn’t have been like that. For periods of the game we played some of the best “team” hockey we have all season – HOWEVER – frustration lead to some of the most unattractive characteristics of the squad re-emerging. There was too much unhelpful criticism, blaming each other and the umpires.
As a result we were unable to exploit the opposition’s whinging midfield.
The Vets went down one goal within minutes of the start before we had had a chance to settle. Gore Court caught us on the break leaving our debut keeper Mr Hayter totally exposed. The game progressed with a good deal of pressure from the Vets forwards and midfield culminating with a penalty flick taken faultlessly by Richard. At half time the Vets should have been able to maintain the initiative and at least equalise or beat Gore Court.
The Vets failed to do so and largely beat ourselves. The game ended unsatisfactorily by conceding a third goal and losing 3-1.
