The stage was set for the Vets to help the 5s league ambitions by beating Folkestone and we had the squad to do it. So what went wrong?
The first half started with a short corner goal from the opposition. The opposition started well with a well balance team of youth and experience and while not dominating us made the Vets look very ordinary. We played good hockey but without the necessary ambition. There was a positive close call when Steve Garth nearly scored from a short corner only to see a miraculous save.
The second half – almost an identical start to the first and the Vets were 2 down. With 20 minutes to go something happened and Vets woke up! Browner scored a beauty against what had been the run of play. Despite continuous pressure and a number of close calls we failed to equalise.
It was a very good game overall to end the Vets season. Thanks to Annette for ensuring everyone was well behaved. Thanks too to Phil Goode, Chris Brown and Roddy Harrington for finding time in their busy diaries to make “guest” appearances – hopefully we will see them all a little more frequently next season!
Phil’s contribution led to his near unanimous selection as MOM.
Special thanks go to David Hayter – who has decided that this season will be his last on Astro – he has been playing hockey and has been a stalwart of the Club for more years than most of the Club have been on the planet (David M and myself excluded!).
