A competitive 5-3 win against Old Willlies 5s

As the song goes "it never rains In southern California, man it pours" could have applied to Saturday. Fortunately, after an horrendous start for everyone getting to College Meadow the weather changed to near southern California sunshine!
Both sides had small but perfectly formed squads.
So, what happen – well after the team tactical talk about passing, formation etc etc the Highwaymen went 1 goal down in less than 3 minutes.
The game progressed with the Highwaymen getting settled and after 15 minutes, their Springbok secret weapon, David Linton, struck for his first of 4 goals. This did not mean Old Willies were to be rolled over. After the home team going 2 goals up, including one from Ravi on his return after injury, the opposition pulled back to 3- 3 after 55 minutes. There were moments when the opposition could have pulled ahead. Luckily their younger players, whilst fitter and faster than most Highwaymen, forgot hockey is a team game – and ultimately cost them in the D when they tried to go for glory instead of passing.
In the last 10 minutes David Linton struck twice and gave the Highwaymen a fine win. Overall it was a great effort in every department!
The enjoyment of being back at College Meadow was made by the weather, both teams desire to play competitive hockey, being back in the Clubhouse and the deft touch of both umpires – Rob and Jeanette – thank you everyone.

The highlight of the morning was seeing Ed Smyth with his family - 2 weeks to the day since his heart attack at Burnt Ash and subsequent heart by pass!

Team:
Steve Bowles (GK), Stephen Gilbert(C), Phil Kinch, Richard Cleall, Phil Bunker, James Hatcher, Ders Baillie, Gary d Souza, Matt Robinson, David Linton, Ravi Wickramasuriya, Steve Miller, Tony D'Cruz

Scorers: David Linton 4, Ravi Wickramasuriya 1

(Readers please note our match reports will no longer be written by our “award winning” Scribe Tim Walters as he decided to move to Devon – what can I say?)
