A vastly improved attitude, approach and application sees the U16 Boys make up for last weeks shocker.

After last weeks mediocre efforts a much improved display was vital. Head Coach Sam Djavit was at the helm and looking for a positive response.

Match report: Sam Djavit

With a strong replenished squad, the stars of the future were stoked up to start the game like a fire cracker. Unfortunately a little too fired up and they let in a sloppy goal in the first 5 mins. BUT THEN…..

Two of the finest goals you'll ever see worthy of any top level game. Both from Ben Hegarty who has recently broken into the Men's 3rd XI with some impressive performances. The first was a clever deflection from the right middle of the circle, that flew past the keeper into the roof of the net.

The second was WOW. Just WOW. The ball got passed out from the back by our incredibly calm defenders. It was passed into the talented Josh Self at inside right who strode forward. Josh slipped it to Henry Baines (another young player putting in impressive displays for the Men's teams) galavanting down the right wing, who with two touches worked the ball nicely into Bertie Page who posted up like an International forward. However, the defender was tight, so Bertie touched the ball, first time behind his back into the path of Ben Hegarty who had beautifully changed the angle of attack. Without much time to get low, Ben struck the ball, upright, on the reverse into the corner of the inside of the side netting. GOAL! A brilliant moment of team cohesion and beauty.
More great team play and movement saw Sam Hutchings finish a flowing move with a tap in to go 3-1 ahead.

If I was the Holcombe Coach, I would've been very scared with that sort of quality on the pitch, but to their credit they fought back resiliently and made an excellent game of it in the second half. Holcs grabbed a second but a well worked short corner from Jake Owen put the game to bed and the match finished 4-2.

MOM - Bertie Page and Ben Hegarty are obvious candidates, but Henry Baines was consistent all day with a series of good choices and just goes to show that sometimes the well executed pass can make a beautiful goal.

Special thanks to Ders for umpiring, a fine performance, with such little sleep!
