Yet again we made our way to the town of Marden to play the Russets but this time at their new ground with facilities that will look fantastic when built ( although a couple of extra temporary toilets would not go amiss ).
The main theme was the cold wind that was blowing – warm up took longer than usual and coats were only reluctantly removed. We were in a group playing four Marden teams ( all named after apples – except for the blooms, obviously the development team ) and Ashford. This is a Blackheath development team but I was so impressed with the commitment and carrying on playing even though they were cold.
They started off well drawing 1-1 against the Blooms and beating the Buds 2-0, the other three games were close, all lost 2 – 0. With Amelia Lewis leading the attack supported by a midfield of Miai Hohenkirk, Maryam Drammeh and Polly Chamberlain who all ran a lot and supported the attacks and produced at times some great moves. Our defence/midfield of Tara Miles Kingston, Dakota Rodriguez, Emily Briggs, Carys Griffiths and often our last line of defence Florence Rhodes, all of them dug in and stopped goals, a few times off the line.
