A maiden victory over hosts leaves manager forced to deliver on promise of cake

By Anne Campbell
After the early confusion over to whether or not to rename the team Breakfast - Athena's nickname is beans and the rest of the team took on similar tags such as Sausages, toast, eggs and bacon - the Scarlets got off to a good start in their first match against Maidstone, quickly opening up a couple of scoring opportunities.
Spurred on by Niall the team manager's promise of chocolate cake for victory.
This was followed by some excellent defending of the Maidstone goal by Juliet in defence and Evie in midfield working together to clear the ball back up the pitch. This led to Isla setting up a first and winning goal, which was scored by Mollie. Result 1-0 win.
The Scarlets’ second match was against Bromley & Beckenham (“Unfair”, cried Niall, “we’re playing two teams!”). We had a tough start with B&B quickly setting up a goal opportunity. However, some excellent defending and clearing by Athena and Evie sent the ball back up to our goal end, where we narrowly missed scoring a goal. More excellent defending saved another goal opportunity by B&B, but despite more good defending, we just conceded two goals. Result 2-0 loss.
In the third match, against Sevenoaks, the Scarlets quickly came under pressure from a strong (and very tall!) opposition. The addition of Ellie in goal meant a number of early goal attempts by Sevenoaks were saved, but unfortunately their manoeuvring proved too good and we conceded a couple of goals, despite overall good defence. The Scarlets began to tire in comparison to a Sevenoaks side who had the benefit of half a dozen subs, and let in a third goal. We were very unlucky to concede a fourth goal, but excellent defence by Lulu prevented the loss of any further goals. Result 4-0 loss.
