Back to Hockey returns this spring at Blackheath & Elthamians Hockey Club (based at London Marathon Ground at Eltham College) alongside hundreds of other clubs across the country, opening their doors to thousands of women and men nationwide, all with the aim to do one thing: getting more players back playing hockey.

A nation was gripped to the TV where 9 million people tuned in to the BBC to cheer on Team GB women’ s hockey team to win gold in Rio so there is no better time to pick up a stick. Back to Hockey is the perfect way to improve fitness in a social and fun way. Back to Hockey is again partnering with Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign which is a national programme celebrating active women around the country who are doing their thing and enjoying it - no matter how well they do, how they look or even how red their face gets.

The Back to Hockey programme, offers fun, sociable and informal sessions for men and women who want to get back into physical activity but may not have played hockey for a number of years, along with those who want to play for the first time and try it out. Essentially anyone, of any ability, can get involved in this sport without fear of judgement. These sessions really are the perfect way for players looking for a fun, social way to get fit and stay in shape.

From 25 May - 13 July 2017, players can learn new skills and discover how to play from scratch before putting it all into practice with small-sided games. What’ s more, we hope to organise Back to Hockey get together’s and dinners with our teams, so it’s ideal for socialising with like-minded people. Getting involved couldn’t be easier; simply visit www.blackheath.co.uk or email info@blackheath.co.uk for more details.

“It’ s an exciting time to come back to hockey as so many women and men have been inspired after our Great Britain women won gold in Rio. Many women have also been inspired by the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign and want to give the sport a try. We welcome all abilities and are keen to show that hockey has come a long way from the days of muddy pitches and waiting around for a touch of the ball!”
