‘McFly??!!!’
You can picture it in that 1955 diner, Michael J Fox sits, as Marty McFly and looks into his milkshake. Our very own Time Traveller had had his influence on this already as McFly procrastinates in his life preserver, much like that seen in the BEHC Knitwear of Tom Archer.
Marty knows the that the proverbial mess was going to be made by the air purifiers of the mid fifty’s and as Biff Tannen entered the Diner, McFly felt the wrath of his nemesis like the Lewes back line felt Matt Jarmo in the final 5 minutes, Yellow for Jarmo, a truck of Manure for Tannen, but you get the gist! For Marty McFly, read the impish Ollie Egan, tearing through the night at a charity event and soaring through the oppo back line like McFly on a hover board, old before his time? Hit the beat Huey! That most famous key board, sax, base and drums intro…
‘The power of love is a curious thing
Make a one man weep, make another man sing
Change a hawk to a little white dove
More than a feeling, that's the power of love
Tougher than diamonds, rich like cream
Stronger and harder than a bad girl's dream
Make a bad one good, mmh make a wrong-one right
Power of love will keep you home at night’
The opening two exchanges of this No.1 smash hit sum up our day, curious through the early stages like a fresher entering their first circle, the coach weeping as we disjointedly fumbled through the first few lines and then the big man, JC (no not that big man) our GK, struck gold with a string of impressive saves. In between the chaff, VVC Lawrence rolled the keeper to make it 1-1.
Following a second defensive mishap, 1-2
and so it fell to Rocket Wilson to change the Hapless Hawks to serene white Doves as he did what he does best, side netting and not a gaviscon in sight. 2-2 and heading for the break. Just enough time for Gabe Downer to add to his collection of green cards as we rolled into the interval ready to make a bad one good & the wrong one right.
The second half is much like a top of the charts hit, the melody & beat is good but the chorus is what everyone came to see and that was just what the BE boys did, put on a show after the break to rattle the cage of an incandescent leader of the western front. Much more slick, much more jazz and much more, let’s say je ne sais quoi, because that’s exactly what is means - we were back and firing and it was at this moment that we sealed the deal!
PC, left slip, Biff Tannen on the mega slap and Speller tried to claim it! Happy days and 3-2. The power of love really had seen us through as it was, for a while, just one of those days, on any given day we might have capitulated, 2-1 down and playing like a truck of manure, massive credit to the spine of Archer, Forshaw, Speller & Burnham who took the game by the scruff of the neck and kicked frustration in to touch like it was the full time claxon.
Burnham had Morrison, Luff, Jones, Egan and Collard running tings through the midfield and by the centre of the second period Lewis ‘the puppet master’ Burnham was more Geppetto than Punch and Judy! And finally the forward line was starting to fire as chances started to fashion, Dr Slack got into the game, Ludo started waltzing, Egan almost Pete Samprassed the Wimbledon out of one that Morri had lobbed to him on the base line and had that gone in it would have been Bonjour Henman Hill. As we turned the screw, Rocket Wilson was throwing rainbow’s to Dave down the flank and it was almost time for last orders at The Crown.
The previous 2 weeks had been pleasing on the eye, this one was that much tougher as we didn’t flow until the 2nd round. No issue there, in fact more pleasing that we rectified the situation from catastrophe and muscled back into it and then slammed it home! Top job all round and probably the true meaning of the Power of Love!
‘It don't take money, don't take fame
Don't need no credit card to ride this train
Tougher than diamonds and stronger than steel
You won't feel nothin' 'til you feel
You feel the power, feel the power of love
That's the power, that's the power of love’
Let’s get Back to the Future!
