New signing Ian Harvey scores late to share the points in an impressive display by the 1’s.

Each year on the last weekend of October, the clocks go backwards by one hour, switching from British Summer Time to Greenwich Mean Time. For many this signifies the start of Winter and the BEHC 1st XI arrived to College Meadow this past Saturday to conditions that very much represent the concept of “Winter”; cold, wet and miserable.

However, putting the conditions to one side and instead focusing on the more serious matter at hand, this week’s home game was against early pacesetters of the league in Wimbledon 2nd XI. This was on paper a difficult challenge and given the early season form by the 1st XI, the team knew a positive result would potentially be a catalyst to greater things as we head into the winter and the gritty part of the season.

The game started at a fairly frantic pace, with Wimbledon taking early control with complex running from high forwards and long balls from their defence. It took some time to get used to, however, the 1st XI managed to grind out this period without conceding with strong resolute defending and some great saves from keeper James Craigmyle. As we passed the 15 minute mark the club were able to implement their stamp on the game and causing their own problems on the Wimbledon defence. Forwards Andy Slack, Dave Lawerence, Laxman Karan and debutant Ian Harvey were all combining well and looked dangerous when attacking at pace on the break. The pressure lead to a couple of short corners right at the end of the Half and a great chance for Andy Slack which unfortunately could only hit the post and as a result we went into half time at 0-0.

The second half was more of the same with both sides creating chances. James Craigmyle once again came to the rescue on multiple occasions with a string of saves from Open play and Short Corners. As we reached the final 15 minutes 1st XI kept pushing for the first goal however, an unfortunate turnover lead to a break for Wimbledon and a short corner. Unfortunately this time it was converted and the 1st XI faced an uphill challenge to now get something from the game.

However, the team still persevered for an equaliser and after a bombardment of aerials into Wimbledon’s half in the final 5 minutes, Dave Lawrence was able to receive and do a trademark run to win a Short Corner. The final whistle blew and the corner was now therefore the final play of the game. The ball came to the first castle and Ian Harvey capped a great first appearance for the Club and slotted his drag flick bottom left to make it 1-1.

On the whole a draw was a fair result, with both sides having enough chances to perhaps feeling aggrieved with not taking the three. More importantly it was a positive performance for the 1st XI and one which we can take into next week and be a momentum builder against Purley.

MOM – James Craigmyle

DOD – Tom Archer (Wasn’t there to defend himself)
